San Francisco launched its official "Poop Patrol" under the San Francisco Department of Public Works (SFDPW). The specialized team actively roams high-complaint areas in vehicles equipped with industrial steam cleaners to sanitize feces before residents report it. Also Bakersfield and San Diego

My mayor told me people keep dumping trash in the same spot so I asked how many times he cleans up the same spot without investigating and he said he just brings the trash to the dump each time so I said like it sounds like he's just enshrined this corner as a city dump and then SFDPW started crying

I get that and every other DPW I've worked with has generally been fine. SF was just a byzantine nightmare

I wouldn't wish going through a SFDPW approval process on anyone.

This is our situation. We had two separate loquats in front of our house and they both died in recent years (naturally, end of life). The first was removed in 2021, the second last summer 2024. Still waiting for SFDPW to remove the stump for the second tree, nearly 9 months later so we can replant.
The couple ignored friends and family who told them to just plant the trees without the city’s permission — they wanted to do it the right way.

But what the Pinzon-Hamiltons thought would be a simple process became a yearslong ordeal navigating San Francisco’s byzantine bureaucracy.
They wanted two street trees replanted. It turned into a years-long slog through S.F. bureaucracy

They were the same units deployed in Paris. Plenty tough!

The issue with them in SF was around oversight, more than anything. The company selling ads was responsible for maintenance, and did little of it. SFDPW was too corrupt to care and force compliance with the contact, and they fell apart.

Huge homeless sweep and cleanup taking place on McKinnon near Toland adjacent Amazon PRIME warehouses and delivery depot. Motor homes etc
SFPD and SFDPW. At least it’s not raining. Clean is great but people need solutions not further displacement.

anyway would be nice to ride along the water from Yosemite Slough to Hunters Point — you can go behind the SFDPW yard for quite a ways but can’t get through. wish we had access to the blue paths — probably wouldn’t get you too radioactive. the trail through the field looks surprisingly fresh

#sfmta, #sfdpw: yes we need bike racks. We also need to locate them so they don't interfere with the ramps needed for wheelchair boarding (or, for that matter, in the path of embarking/disembarking passengers of all mobility levels)

Can we keep the necessary […]

@sfdpw there's a small manhole at the intersection of 24th and Guererro that clanks very loudly as cars pass over it. Please fix!

Context for why this is funny: SF infamously struggled with managing street litter in the 2010s after Gavin Newsom did this at the behest of convicted racketeer and former SFDPW head Mohammed Nuru. Every other city in the Bay Area just bought off-the-shelf Big Belly units.
June 2007: “Mayor Gavin Newsom announced last week that hundreds of city-owned garbage cans are being taken off city streets because, he says, there are just too many out there.”

“I’m still pro-garbage can”, said Newsom, who is campaigning for re-election

the absurdly corrupt head of SFDPW convinced him to get rid of a huge number of public trash cans, haunting the city to this very day.

The SFDPW corruption scandal is like a skeleton key for everything holding back the Democratic Coalition’s ability to govern effectively.

I say this as a proud Democrat who wants my party to govern more effectively.

Has anyone done an authoritative write-up of Gavin Newsom’s War On Trash Cans and the long shadow of the SFDPW corruption scandal?

My benchmark for local public corruption cases out here is the SFDPW case involving Mohammed Nuru, four consecutive mayors, and the intentional removal of public trash cans from city streets.

You may have already heard that Mohammed Nuru, the former SFDPW director who was a central figure in a major city corruption scandal, is back in town, and “was seen at City Hall.” As it turns out, he wasn’t there on business. His niece was getting married.
