🌟 Better Things to Come 🌟
A digital drawing in halftone of a pretty, fat girlie in a black bunny suit, thigh-highs, cowboy boots, clown ruffle collar, and pointy clown hat. She sits on an overturned crate of mikan in front of a full moon and starry sky. She holds a balloon that says Happy New Year and there are remnants of a new year celebration, including glasses and bottles of champagne, kagami mochi, and shōchikubai in a vase. The girlie is crying.

In Japanese, the three of them together are called 松竹梅 (shōchikubai) and they are considered essential elements of any classical garden.

That's gorgeous! 😍
I found this shochikubai-patterned hanten in a local charity shop last year for a mere NZ$15. Wonderfully cosy in winter.

The Three Winter Friends are Pine, Bamboo, and Plum--shōchikubai. They are both loaded with New Year's auspiciousness when found together & cleverly linked to the the yūkaku--red light district of old Japan.

I explain it all in the latest #uncannyjapan here:

I'm still mad that a Japanese teacher asked us to translate and use 松竹梅 in a sentence. I believe I wrote "It is difficult to explain Shochikubai in English" and got it right because what else is there to say?

Das Trio Matsu 松 (Kirfer), Take 竹 (Bambus) u. Ume 梅 (jp. Pflaume), mit dem meine Goldfischhaltung in Hamburg 2004 begann, habe ich als Bilder nach deren Ableben verewigen lassen.
松竹梅 (Shōchikubai) ist ein Symbol des Wohls "Langes Leben, Gesundheit u. Schönheit". Mein Name "Shōchi" ist 'ne Abkürzung.

I've left at The 2nd Shochikubai Hostel on the past 6:35 a.m. . After I've rested for over 6 hours, I've set out from the hostel and run 5 km— via Nagoya Station —to the area near Nagoya Castle; afterwards, I've gone to watch the marathon race walking events for 2026 Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya.

In the back of the #HouseofFiveLeaves manga, there's a bit that explains that the grouping Matsu/pine, Take/bamboo, Ume/plum is called Shochikubai and is considered to be a symbol of good fortune. They're the Three Friends of Winter 💖Anyway, I felt like drawing them in pretty kimonos
#SaraiyaGoyou
A digital drawing of Matsu, Otake and Ume from House of Five Leaves. Matsu and Otake are sitting next to each other and Ume facing them, on a slightly higher surface. Both Matsu and Ume are looking at Otake, who seems to be telling them something. She presses her finger thoughtfully against her chin. All are smiling warmly and are wearing patterned kimonos. Matsu has a dark red kimono with green gold and pink pine trees. Otake has a blue kimono with pink and blue bamboo. Ume has a beige kimono with flowering plum tree branches. They're sitting outside at night, lit by a flew oval lanterns.

So much #WIP art and writing... ("Suggestive" label for top "nudity" in one image, and the implications of one piece of writing-- both on the bottom row. Can't label for both "suggestive" and "nudity", unfortunately-- or individually, for that matter.)
Warning: multiple limbs, multiple eyes.

Metrics are 13 chapters; 61 thousand, 5 hundred 69 words total; and 1 thousand 6 hundred 43 words for Chapter 13 itself. Literature description: "A somewhat-detailed account of the life of Umetarō, the current house head of the Iwasaki clan, starting in his youth and ending when he became house head himself." Story snippet (which is cut off at the end): "Our travel to Wolgyeong by boat happened with very little issues. "Nami-chan was excited the whole time, running around, trying to look over the edge, constantly being picked up by their fùmǔ to calm them down, to show them the expanse of water around us. "On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Kiri-chan seemed a bit uneasy, didn't like the rocking of the boat, had to be brought to its lower levels and relaxed by my hahaoya as their eomeoni soaks in the gentle breeze of the chilly Mors air. Ichigo-kun went with them not because they didn't like the boat, but because they--" A screenshot of the work-in-progress short story anthology for Schlocktober 2025, with a focus on Entry 9 which is simply labeled "Student Loans". This entry is 3 thousand, 4 hundred nine words long (of the 3 thousand, 6 hundred eighty-eight words total). Literature description: "Mikki feels pressured to do camwork to pay off xer tuition; Prompt #9a: Nonconsensual Consent". Story snippet: "It's very hard, going to school as a member of the Foreign Exchange Program. What's even harder is when your parents said that they'd pay for your full tuition, but they accidentally got the currency conversions completely wrong. "That is why I am using legal loopholes to pay what they couldn't cover." A work-in-progress line-less illustration of a fat feminine figure [Mother Death, Mors, or Kamatayan, she/her], coded-Philippine indigenous, with two sets of arms and breasts, sitting cross-legged on the floor with her arms up. She is wearing clothing articles (and tattoos) inspired by the dress of a few different Igorot ethnic groups (a product of some earlier research), and is carrying two hand-axes in her upper set of arms and two baskets on her scarf-wrapped head.
