One year ago today I posted this miniature Iron Man photo I created using real lighting, figures, a homemade giant doughnut 🍩 and miniature sets...

I prefer to design things on paper before translating to computer software. Probably not the most efficient but it's what I like ✏️ 🦋 ✨

2026 vs 2013 version

Redraw based on an old illustration from around the time I started drawing digitally and had no idea what I was doing, other than desperately trying to learn from artists like Pete McKee that is.

Translating my hand-drawn pattern to the computer. I'll probably tweak it a bit, but this kit will be available soon 😊🦋🧵

Journaling is much trickier when you can’t get your hands on waterproof ink

Last post I can justifiably put up for #mermay

More cats are on the way 😌

#sheffieldartist #catart #illustration
Close up photo of a simple painting of a ginger, tabby, and white cat against a magenta background. It shows the front half of the cat and yellow and white star and sparkle motifs. Close up photo at an angle of a painting of a tortoiseshell cat from the front, sat like a loaf. Behind the cat is a blue circle, with a red background behind that. There are pale yellow/green sparkle motifs. Close up photo showing part of a painting of a cat in watery orange gouache and outlined in black fineliner. The cat sits on a lilac pool with white sparkles in it and is surrounded by lilac sparkles. Close up photo of a painting of a sleeping ginger cat against a yellow and red checked background.

Playing with comics 😎 here's part of a WIP based on (possibly misquoted) Drops of Jupiter lyrics 🖋️

#comic #illustration #sheffieldartist
Photo of a comic page in progress with a glass dip pen, with an ink bottle in the background. The comic panel is drawn in black ink linework, showing a stylised woman's portrait with her eyes closed and mouth slightly open. Text reads "and she talks like June". Photo taken from above of the same comic panel, now with dilute black ink wash in the background showing small beams of light radiating outwards and adding some shadow to the portrait.

WIPs WIPs WIPs 💁🏻🐱

I'm getting a little closer each time to what feels like my style for cats. But there are so many ways to draw and paint them, there's plenty more to try!

#catart #catillustration #sheffieldartist
Photo of a desk from above. It is covered in art supplies including a big tin of wax pastels on one side and paint brushes spread out in the top corner. In the middle is an open sketchbook with a WIP of an orange and white cat on one page and a painting of a calico cat from front-on.

I decided to be brave and take in some oil paints to the life drawing session yesterday. The combination of fumes from the gas heater and my turps/oil medium mix, was intoxicating. Heh.

A seated female figure in black and white oil paint. She sits crossed legged looking down to the right The background is a warm grey. I'm extremely happy with this piece. It was a 5 minute study. There are still issues that I have with sections of it that dont sit or look natural. However I'm more than proud of how I'm developing and how the legs in this look. On a side note I did attempt a 5 minute portrait. It went very badly wrong. Heh. I'll post my less successful and quicker studies when I get a chance. A mix of 2 and 5 minute figure studies from 'line of action' a lovely figure drawing site with a number of configurable options. Even at the free level. Win. The image shows 2 standing figures in black and white oil paint on a grey background. The other marks in black around them are difficult to decipher. They are various limbs and torso parts from 2 minute studies. I used these to help work out the consistency of the oil paint. I needed it to flow like ink but to have a thicker consistency to it. The image shows 3 fairly decent 2 minute figure studies. Again they are rendered in black and white oil paint. Well payees grey and titanium white if I'm being exact. I seem to lose my sense of proportion easily. So I'll need to do a lot of quick studies that focus solely on getting the body angels and proportions. My break time is over and I need to sort laundry yay!

A comic panel in the centre of a digital pink to yellow gradient background. The panel reads "since her return from her stay on the moon". The image depicts the moon (as a crescent with dark part of the circle also visible) and a woman with long hair walking along the top of it. The background is a dark almost black wash with some stars in it. A comic panel in the same format. A hand touches the flower of a snowdrop growing from a grassy area with a couple of snowdrops in the background. Text reads "she listens like spring". Same format. Comic panel depicts a woman's portrait. She has long curly hair and a fringe in a stylised way. She is looking down or has her eyes closed, and her lips parted, and the background has rays of light projecting out from her. Text reads "she talks like June". Full page in landscape of the whole comic. Each panel is in portrait orientation and the three panels are arranged side by side on the page.

Less successful works here. I've since tried to correct their proportions.
I'll see tomorrow how well that worked. It's also tidy my studio up day tomorrow. Boo hiss.

The image shows a figure seated on the ground against a red and orange background. The figure has her left knee raised and her right leg relaxed at an angle. I have some how got carried away with her hair and shrunk the rest of her head. I've since attempted to correct that, and I will see tomorrow how well that worked. I like the feet and the modelling of the legs. I feel that the right leg appears slightly disconnected from the hip. But it's all a learning process. I am getting the overall proportions correct, but the individual limbs are sometimes badly proportioned within that. This is a reclining figure completed in oil paint (titanium white and Paynes grey) against a warm grey background. The life model presents her back to the viewer. In terms of how successful this is. The head could be a tad longer, and the back should be a bit longer too. The upper torso despite its flaws is the best part of the image. The lower half of the body is shortened and squished. I've lengthened the lower legs since. Pushing the ankles off the picture plane. But I'm not sure the image is salvageable. Lots to learn and process.
