Day 3 - A song I would send to someone without an explanation.

Ella Fitzgerald - Make Love To Me (10” 78 rpm shellac, 1941). Go big! 🥰

It takes 18-24 months to raise a steer to slaughter weight. Rising costs and drought can slow this process down and make it more expensive. Disease lowers numbers, driving up costs.
I hope ranchers wake up and shellac this Asshole at the polls
Trump in Kansas blames ranchers for high beef prices: "We could use a little more beef if you don't mind. Could you speed it up a bit?"

Once I'm more recovered, I'm going to start working on Night Worker’s Collective. Think creepy, minimal instrumental Shellac.

in both cases there are quite obvious material reasons to attribute the shift to: the musicians' strike and shellac rationing in the 1940s, and the dominance of streaming in the 2020s. but it's also worth considering the stressful atmosphere of the times as a contributing factor.

Could the old shellac 78s be played backwards?

This has been a lovely gift of getting hold of a flat-bed press (though having described the Quarto as the love child of a Vandercook and a tortilla press, I can’t un-see that). There is no way I could have printed this on my clamshell presses short of embedding the whole forme in shellac.

Evening Song.

A lovely tune from 1931 that features the super-swell vocals of Al Bowlly, here’s Ray Noble and The New Mayfair Orchestra - Goodnight Sweetheart (10” 78 rpm shellac). 🥰🥱

youtu.be/2EvB4pwdkVQ?... that said my favourite version is the one where they play in the crowd and let a bunch of kids come and play on the drums, and it still works with the song, just makes it seem like a slightly more avant garde version. who ever thought Shellac would be so wholesome.

I was today years old when I learned "Confectioner's Glaze" (aka, food-grade shellac) is an insect secretion - the bug makes cocoons of waxy residue which are harvested/processed - and that might weird ppl out. But then I thought, "why is THAT weird but everything bees secrete is eaten and adored?"
