Seen within a couple of metres of each other, three shieldbugs. A Parent Bug looking like a fruit salad with legs, a Hairy Shieldbug and Pentatoma rufipes nymph.

Spot the difference.
2 of the 4 Vernal Shieldbugs that I spotted on our allotment in Norwich last week and the superficially similar Hairy Shieldbug that was next to them for comparison.

We took a walk down the valley this afternoon whilst the sun was shining. A few creatures out enjoying the weather, but best of them all was a cluster of Vernal Shieldbugs. 23 adults and 2 nymphs at least. Never seen so many in one place. All on nettles.

More bugcrontyr. Still refining these designs, but I think they're a lot closer to what I want to personally portray them as.

Three of the creatures seen yesterday @hilliergardens.bsky.social Two Vernal Shieldbugs, one considerately posed Silver Y moth and a beautiful Buff-tailed Bumblebee.

Shieldbugs seen at Fishers Green, Essex today 19th October: Bishop's Mitre Shieldbug, Vernal Shieldbug (first record for site), Southern Green Shieldbug (only the third adult I have seen, despite seeing hundreds of nymphs) and two Box Bugs. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

I've had lots of Southern Green Shieldbugs, Nezara viridula, in the garden this year but fewer now the weather is colder, so I was surprised to find one on a dried up bit of onion at the back of the fridge! 🧅😆

Not the best of photographs😔 Parent bug tucked away next to stalk of a Russet (apple) I had selected, it was soon off elsewhere🙂 #Shieldbugs #HumberheadLevels #Yorkshire

Realized I needed the overhead close up shot retrospectively, took the photos from the side so as not to disturb it. Was concentrating on shieldbugs, otherwise would have spent more time with it.

The Spiked shiekdbug, blending in so well with his surroundings. While most shieldbugs are vegetarian, this larger shieldbug is a predator, and feasts on smaller invertebrates. The amazing prehistoric spikes at the shoulders are used in combat with other Spiked shieldbugs. Amazing nature!

A couple of wildside walks today for the special National Garden Scheme day at Beth Chatto Gardens in lovely weather. Highlights were the slime mould Fuligo septica and two Ectophasia crassipennis, an internal parasite-fly of shieldbugs. First seen here last October: only half a dozen Essex records.

I found four Blue Shieldbugs (Zicrona caerulea) in a nettle patch in Abbey Gardens, Waltham Abbey on 11th October. I am hoping this turns out to be a reliable location as I have only seen this species twice before. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

As well as Arma custos and Ceraleptus gracilicornis, Glen Powell and I found 12 other spp of shieldbug at Betteshanger CP, on 5th Oct. These included 5 adult and 2 nymph Ornate Shieldbug (pale form) and 2 Spiked Shieldbugs. A red and black Ornate was found amongst the pale Ornates the following day.

Shieldbug

Anyone else getting infested with these things this time of year?

When recording Shieldbugs & Allies in Kent back in 2016/17, I didn't see any Vernal Shieldbugs (Peribalus strictus vernalis). Last week, I saw quite a few! #Pentatomidae #Shieldbug #Kent

Bishop's Mitre shieldbugs were abundant during last week's wildlife group visit to Dudmaston NT property in Shropshire. So it was perhaps unsurprising that we also found the Bishop's Mitre Parasite Fly, Cistogaster globosa, a small Tachinid.

Sciocoris sideritidis has spread from its known site in Purfleet, Essex, half a mile to the wildlife garden and car park of RSPB Rainham Marshes TQ5478. I found 3 specimens here on 2 October. #Shieldbugs @britishbugs.bsky.social @rockwolf74.bsky.social

A Spiked Shieldbug at Runnymede. Fun facts according to my new Pocket Guide to Shieldbugs: it's the only shieldbug to overwinter as an egg and is so named because of the thorn-like shoulders on the pronotum. (Casually dropping in words like pronotum to give impression I know what I'm talking about.)

Some Hemiptera from Jersey. All those shown were quite common in the east, where I was based. All the Southern Green Shieldbugs I saw were nymphs.

Surprised to see Southern Green Shieldbugs, Nezara viridula, on Small Teasel, a change of diet from runner beans!
