So cool! Love shinglebacks.

The last few days of travel have brought oceans of wild flowers, replacing the dry red sand. Seeing Sturt's Desert Pea hidden under the taller flowers was a nice surprise!
Wildlife spotted: a red roo, lots of emus (inc a solo dad with his chicks), a goanna, a dragon & a few shinglebacks.

Colloquially they are known as ‘sleepy lizards’ in my neck of the woods. Nobody ever calls them ‘shinglebacks’. Don’t think I ever have in my entire life. Just a bit more useless information for the international hivemind.
Everyone shush!! I just found out about shingleback lizards and they're ADORABLE!! 😍

As an Australian reptile enthusiast, I can tell you these have been called “shinglebacks” in every book, documentary, museum and zoo I’ve ever encountered. Maybe “pinecone lizard” once or twice. I’ve never heard of a “sleepy lizard”, it seems vaguely insulting.

Shinglebacks are on my list of animals I adore and want as a pet, but will never own 😍

Snakes on a plane, skinks in the post: The slippery and growing problem of animal smuggling - SMH
Australia’s unique reptiles are the most frequently targeted species, particularly blue‑tongue skinks, shinglebacks and rare snakes. Hong Kong continues to be the top destination for illegal exports, with most leaving the country via New South Wales. Despite the surge in enforcement, wildlife crime experts mapping the illegal trade have found nine out of 10 animal-smuggling attempts in and out of Australia are successful, earning millions of dollars each year for crime gangs, decimating animal populations and risking the nation’s biosecurity. Snakes like this one, seized as part of Operatino Django, are being smuggled out of Australia in droves Victoria’s Conservation Regulator has recorded a 254 per cent rise in wildlife-related crime reports over the past five years, including instances of trafficking and cruelty. A crackdown on wildlife trafficking syndicates has caused the number of smuggled animal seizures to more than double in the past two years. Federal authorities stopped more than 1100 trafficked native animals at the border last year. Australian reptiles worth up to $100,000 each on international black markets are being intercepted in the $32 billion annual global trade – the world’s fourth-largest illegal market behind drugs, counterfeiting and human trafficking. Crime gangs are being caught in record...

It has a blue tongue! Old mate wasn't too happy with my phone and was giving me a full threat display. Shinglebacks are harmless though - it's all bluff.

those as a pet because the lizards in the area i grew up/lived in before i came to melbourne are one of the few things that i miss about living there. I also really love skinks, especially blue tounged skinks and shinglebacks. Beyond australian reptiles, I also think tegus are pretty neat and wish..

"No dinosaur has ever done me any harm. Some of em might have galumphed a bit in the old days, but nowadays cassowaries, emus, goannas, and dear little shinglebacks are really rather cute. Humans, on the other hand, oh lordy..."

The body proportions of the blue tongues and shinglebacks are so funny, they are basically chonky sausages with tiny little limbs. Impossible not to love them 🥹

Now back to the species on the list.

Australia has an excellent selection of skinks. How excellent? Well, Shinglebacks, Blue-tongues (and not just one species), Land Mullets, spiky Egernias…I won’t go on. (3/9)

Just heard about Gus Gus’ passing at Clint’s Reptiles. So sad, I’m especially sad for Clint and his family that clearly loved Gus Gus.

Loving and spoiling my girl Peanut a little extra today. She’s my favourite grumpy little sausage. ❤️🥹 #lizards #shinglebacks #pets #herpetology

What do you call them in the west?
We’ve always known them as Shinglebacks here in SE Australia but sleepy lizards or bobtails seem to be common elsewhere. 😊

Despite sub-zero mornings, a few #reptiles still out on a sunny Canberra afternoon at Mt Ainsleigh. Two Shinglebacks (Tiliqua rugosa), a pair of Boulenger's Skinks (Morethia boulengeri) and an Eastern Three-toed Earless Skink (Hemiergis talbingoensis) #ItsTooCold #canberra #Herping

So cute! Do you have any Shinglebacks there?

Ok the Onion just did a shingleback joke. That's... rather unexpected.

(Shinglebacks are monogamous, if you don't get the context of the joke, though they don't live with their mate the whole year.)

The shops had a little bug, reptile and snake exhibit and Hiro got to pet shinglebacks, bluetongues, turtles and a python, but he backed waaaaaay back when I was holding a spiny leaf insect on my hand. It’s so great to see him have such a huge love of wildlife and animals, just like I did/do.
