#shipping-finance
So far, we’ve gotten into:

1. The oil-tanker escort business
2. The shipping-insurance business
3. The militia-arms and finance business

And it’s only Tuesday.

Trump: "I have ordered the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide political risk insurance and guarantees for the Financial Security of ALL Maritime Trade through Gulf. This will be available to all Shipping Lines. If necessary, the Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait"

The problem is that part of those measures included discounts on shipping from Russian Railways, and the Minister Of Finance said that the government didn’t have the money reimburse those reduced shipping costs, so Russia Railways just has to eat the costs

Anyone putting together a zine: Vet your finance and shipping mods VERY carefully. Back in 2023, Cym/Kroalias signed up to be the finance and shipping mod for dozens of physical zines and then did not ship what people had paid for. The money went missing and much of it has still not been paid back.

On a personal basis, I don't miss my old job, but I do miss some of the in-depth features I wrote and reported on topics like repatriations, tariffs, design, climate change, art shipping, campaign finance, arts education, immigration, art crime, as well as data graphics.

I can't get over this. Other countries do not pay tariffs. They are a duty, or tax, imposed on the importer. You are not collecting "export taxes" from other countries for shipping goods to you

Trump says US will use the Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance for maritime trade in the Gulf, with possible US Navy escorts through Strait of Hormuz.

Companies would pay insurance premiums to US — effectively making DC financial backstop for global energy shipping.

The UK has sanctioned a British shipping finance veteran for his role in buying tankers that ended up in the russian shadow fleet.

The blacklisting of john ormerod, 74, is the first time a British person or business has been targeted over the sale of ships that have since hauled russian oil.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 Former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor:

Putin funds his war by selling oil/gas via a shadow fleet of old tankers that evades sanctions, shipping to India and China.

Trump has shown he can crack down on this fleet - that would hurt Russia's ability to finance the war.

Most economists, especially policy makers, never interact with the real economy. They do not care and are not interested in supply chains, logistics, or international shipping rates. They live in a world of abstracted numbers and finance.

Trump is Putin’s bitch:

The US opposed a joint G7 effort to lower the $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil exports, which bans Western companies from shipping, insuring or servicing Russian oil sold above that price. It’s designed to limit Russia’s ability to finance its war against Ukraine.

The proposal was dropped after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly declined to support it.

Zine mods, PLEASE stop taking on finance and shipping roles if you're not in a stable environment for it.

Seriously, I keep seeing this.
