so the MR said, well, I know what we'll do since we're losing money, we're gonna buy a bunch of heavily indebted bankrupt shortlines and expand our network through the midwest. forgetting of course that there might have been business reasons all those other railroads had gone out of business

Railfan here, yep. buyouts of small businesses (known in railroading as shortlines) and consolidation isn't a new thing, just look at the Genesee and Wyoming and all the shortlines they've gobbled up. for an example of Class 1 consolidation, there's CPKC.

Its corporate parent has a policy of electrifying everything they can afford, but they put up with the steady stream of remanufactured first & second generation alcos that the TdM picks up from scrappers to rebuilt, because those things can be leased out to shortlines while keeping the shops happy.

Finally tracked down a Bachmann 70-tonner in the livery used by the Salzberg shortlines. Runs ok but a little loud. The plan is for this to eventually get custom decals for the Fort Dodge, Des Moines, & Southern, a former interurban eventually merged into C&NW.

Modelling hasn't really been an issue. It's more railfanning, particularly keeping track of local shortlines.

Since yall liked my TAG post, have more random defunct shortlines that Tara autisticly likes. The original Norfolk southern, serving north Carolina and Virginia, lasted until 1974 when it was taken over by Southern. 8 years later the name and reporting marks would be reused for the current day NS.
