Boy it was fun travelling to shovelbum (contract archaeology) gigs that fall on last minute, one way tickets, bought by a third party, for a person (me) who had spent the previous three summers in the Middle East.

Always enjoy taking a shovel to invasives - bittersweet 0, me 35 (or so). My parents don't want gifts anymore, they prefer not to have their house subsumed by vines & I'm doing my part, lolol.

Introduce yourself with some jobs you’ve done apart from what you do now:

* summer camp counselor
* HR filing monkey at a utility company
* bakery cashier
* shovel monkey/shovelbum at a CRM (commercial archaeology) company
Introduce yourself with some jobs you've done apart from what you do now:

* counseled at camp and led canoe trips
* sorted invoices
* operated a 16" telescope
* ran experiments on a dye laser

(the latter sounds highly skilled but I was an undergraduate student and absolutely terrible at it)
Introduce yourself with some jobs you’ve done apart from what you do now:

+ waiter at a buffet-style† steak restaurant
+ waiter at a cafe/bar
+ bookstore clerk
+ 3rd shift hotel front desk
+ many jobs at Kinkos, also including 3rd shift‡

† IOW fancy fancy
‡ I am aware it’s ironic I now run a press

When I was shovelbuming ACA was such a game changer. I can only imagine how brutal it is for current shovelbum folks.

Oh also, a lot of work in archaeology is actually done in the lab. Boston has an archaeology lab which is awesome (@archaeology.boston.gov) and has awesome people. Other cities might have a lab as well and internships? Or volunteering? Lots of work to be a shovelbum and starting early is best.

A lot of the work I've done in forensics can't really share which is always a huge bummer, but I have spent time as a shovelbum and thats usually OK as long as I'm not adding location info. Here is a spearpoint that we found in N. Florida. I call it "The Wolf's Head" due to its shape. #archaeology

My dream is to fund archaeology projects for young archaeologists. Not established people. NatGeo+NSF have no $. Someone give me a billion dollars. I would demand they all host me as a shovelbum (the unhinged part)
i understand becoming unfathomably rich and losing your mind, i just don’t understand why no one is unhinged in an interesting way. me? i would be on the howard hughes trajectory.
It's so funny how miserable a guy with $100bn is. With the ability to do literally anything a human being can do, Elon chooses to spend every day online getting mad and responding 🤣 to right wing guys who look like Beebop and Rocksteady

I hate to be one of those born-again exercise types but Lagree pilates has changed me for le good. The pain from an old shovelbum hip injury is starting to nullify without PT. Just sucks getting back to it everytime I leave for out-of-town work...
