“Technically I take Sunday off,” Aldrich told us. “That’s when God made waffles.”

Happy trade war to all who are forced to celebrate! At least it’s Shrove Tuesday! Have some pancakes! Don’t forget to keep giving up American goods for Lent!

Shrove Tuesday

We have crossed the gap between Christmas and Easter.

in a way, the gap between midwinter and spring.

Candlemas, 2 February, is 40 days after Christmas.

Shrove Tuesday, 40 days before Palm Sunday and the start of Easter.

No pressure, but in Irish tradition from 6 Jan to Shrove Tuesday was Seraft, the main marriage negotiation period. Need to get that dowry firmed up, because if you're not married by evening of Shrove Tuesday you can't marry in Lent, and realistically you're on the shelf til next year.
Apparently the first Sunday in January is known as "Dating Sunday" because it's the busiest day for people signing up to and matching on dating apps, but you can enjoy the same experience offline by exchanging two sentences with strangers and then never speaking again

It's Shrove Tuesday. It's the beginning of Shrove hunting season. However, they must be hunted by hand ever since hunting them with hounds was banned.

King James I so enjoyed (I assume?) Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice on Shrove Sunday in 1605 that he requested it again on Shrove Tuesday. Love the spelling for "Shaxberd" and "Marchant of Venis". TNA AO 3/908 discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2...

Eggs were relevant to Easter because they were banned during Lent. This is why you use them all up making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and then make a big deal of them when Lent ends, e.g. decorating them, hiding them for kids to find, and of course making your traditional Easter Tansy
