Amen. In our house, we had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, latkes for Hannukah, fish on Friday. It was Mom's way of teaching us about our differences.....and how rich those differences made our country.

Today is National Pancake Day

Today celebrates the simple griddle cake with a history dating back over 30,000 years. There are two "Pancake Days", not to be confused with Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day), the day before Ash Wednesday , the start of Lent, when pantry items were used up before fasting.

Then Erymi stood forth. She begged ruth for Oshis, since she is bechild and owns her manmate’s sore need. She told he is a good man, and korasha fighting is no great thing. Lady-Captain thanked their speech but answered that, even when korasha fight, they must sheed law and not wreak harm to others. Thus their word holds no ruth-sake. Then I stood forth and asked speech. When Lady-Captain alet, I asked her the first thing she had taught us of reeveship. She answered I should better tell, which got small laughter from the hall. So I told reeveship's first thing is that reeves answer for their underlings and their deeds. Therefore, I quoth, I should answer for all that had happened three days earlier. I was Oshis’s reeve. I was the fight-trial’s marshal, and I had lost right drightship. Therefore, I asked Lady-Captain to forgive Oshis the sin and make the guilt wholly mine.

At that word he paled, for he said if elder lore tells true, then the Moqeva had meddled with more than worldgates, but likely also had fellowship with the unholiness that dwells between stars. He then asked whether the Aslanta’s coming might have awakened these balethings, to which I could not read. In good news, they have taken the swart-things’ tokens off our hands, and we have no more business with them. We have gotten berth here until the next flatbark leaves upflood. Since already Father Yaro has lowered, it is likely no longer than two or three days. After our hardship from Eiha, I would give my warriors some ease, even with the lag homeward. It turns out that Great-Something Grandad Ephraim was a policeman who, on Pancake Day in 1865, kicked a man up the arse so hard that they died.
YORKSHIRE SPRING ASSIZES. WEST RIDING DIVISION. CROWN COURT. MANSLAUGHTER BY A POLICEMAN AT BRADFORD. Ephraim Wooller (40), was charged with the man-slaughter of Charles Beechey, at Bradford, on the 28th February last. Mr. C. Foster prosecuted, and the pri-soner was defended by Mr. Wheelhouse. The prisoner was a constable in the Bradford police force, and on the night in question, which was Shrove Tuesday, he was on night duty. The deceased, who was an overlooker in a rag shop, had been taking supper at a friend's house, and was accompanying home, about eleven o'clock, a woman who had been one of the party, when the woman's foot slipped in Peel Street, and she fell on the pavement. Deceased stooped down to lift her up, and whilst in this position the prisoner gave him a violent kick on the perenium, the result of which was to render him almost insensible, and to produce injuries which re-sulted in death on the 14th of March. The deceased and the woman were both a little merry, having partaken of rum and ale at their friend's house; and it was stated by the policeman, when charged with the offence, that at the time he administered the kick to the deceased he and the woman were in an indecent position. The defence was that the injuries had been sustained by the deceased by falling on the curb-stone, while in a state of intoxica-tion, and not by any violence used by the prisoner. The jury returned a verdict of Guilty. The sentence of the Court must be a weighty one, and would be that of penal servitude for seven years.
