The SHSAT helps concentrate opportunity and resources within a small set of NYC schools, widening inequities across the entire public school system.

Read up as @drkysr.bsky.social and Jonathan Greenberg dig into it:

City control versus state control: why changing specialized high school admissions is more complicated than it looks. #SHSAT #NYCSchools
OP-ED: Transforming the specialized high school admissions process
Every year, NYC reacts at the low number of Black and Latine students admitted to specialized high schools. It's time to fix the process.

"will show up in metrics (SAT scores, enrollment in a 2-yr vs 4-yr college, etc)"

That reads like an admission that students admitted under an alternative screen would not be as academically strong as those admitted via SHSAT scores.

Wait, there’s more: this would also even further reduce the already shamefully low number of Black and Hispanic students at the “Big Three,” and have additional segregating spillover effects at other non-SHSAT schools

This will in turn be weaponized as proof that the SHSAT is the fairest way of determining merit, and it will strangle the life out of whatever little political will is left to repeal Hecht-Calandra

I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the co-authors of this piece, but using a non-SHSAT admissions scheme for the so-called “Little 5” risks considerable unintended consequences—it’s not an accident that some opponents of integration have even recommended the exact same plan

This is going to sound hideous, but gazing almost a decade into the future, I care about exactly one criterion:

Performance of eight graders on the SHSAT. That's it. We're planning to keep the ORC in NYC schools, and all that matters before 9th is that test.
I've been thinking about this guide for months, and I'm so happy it's now published.

NYC parents: you probably already know that school admission season started this week! myself and the AMAZING @chalkbeat.org team create this guide for you! [🧵]
How to Vet a Public School in New York City
Choosing an NYC school for your child? Here’s what to look for and what questions to ask, according to education journalists at Chalkbeat and The City Reporter.

This is one of the reasons why the whole “crawl over the bodies of your classmates to get to take an AP” thing at SHSAT schools is so irritating

I had a feverish dream that the president of the 92nd Street Y, whose father was holistically admitted to Bronx Science and who has kids approaching HS age, wrote an opinion piece saying that the Mamdani coalition can and must be fractured by something something SHSAT…man, I am really sick, lol
I guess there are worse times to have a household Covid outbreak than during a nor’easter, be careful out there folls

Lol not the CEO of 92nd street Y begging anti-Zohran pro-Israel extremists to “resist the temptation to take the bait” and encouraging them to talk about the SHSAT instead!

Sure bro, I’ll become the King of England before that happens! Get to the drawing board.

Why Mamdani remains focused on Israel as NYC mayor
Sincerity alone does not explain his single-mindedness in the face of this much political friction, so what's the benefit?

It’s entirely possible that she could have sent her kid down another path — the SHSAT route, the private school route — and wound up with a different kind of bad outcome and written an essay about that, instead. My kid loved his HS, but I have a friend whose daughter had an awful time there

He's backed off a lot of things. He was for "defund the police". Not anymore. He was against SHSAT for admissions. Not anymore. There are other things. People just decide someone is their guy and then they make excuses they would not for someone else. It's very much like the way Trumpers behave.

Finally, importantly: the child ended up at an excellent HS—there are tons of very wealthy families who have had an eagle eye on every aspect of their child’s education who are thrilled to have their kids go here, it is one of the most popular non-SHSAT schools. All’s well that ends well! /end

where they were in the minority, since those schools are majority Asian, from varied backgrounds & class statuses. One thing I do think she should’ve mentioned is Prep 4 Prep, which steers a lot of Black academic achievers away from the SHSAT & into private schools, but the truth is

NYC public schools are not perfect. Is there a segregation issue yes. Could schools do a better job of preparation for the SHSAT? Of course. But what you’re ultimately saying is that the best school system in the country is being held up by the white children in the state.

She thought my support of the Specialized High School Admission Exam, the SHSAT, was racist. I thought her school politics were deeply misguided, and well, quite racist.

Unlike Hannah-Jones I have nothing to walk back.
