As a disabled person, I have met disability advocates, those who share knowledge with others, accessibility advocates, those who raise awareness, and those who share their lives to make others with disabilities feel less alone. 

I have not, however, ever met a single “sickfluencer.”

the ridiculous thing is, I thought the "vibration" or "shaking" feeling I have been having, came from high blood pressure, but it's either "normal" or low when it happens. Could be more related to my tachycardia? I can only wait for now, for a cardiology appoint. #sickfluencer #disabled #artist

What may have otherwise been transitory feelings are seized upon and obsessed over until they form a central pillar of a person’s identity. A chronic-illness influencer won’t want to get “better” any more than a female-bodied transgender person would want to re-identify with their sex.

If they become knowledgeable about their condition, they're “too attached” to their diagnosis. If they speak publicly about their illness, they're “attention-seeking”. Almost any patient response can be turned into evidence for the theory. And there is an uncomfortable irony in repeatedly accusing others of seeking attention while becoming a prominent public figure through telling people that their physical symptoms may actually be psychological. Perhaps if we're going to talk about “sickfluencers”, we should also examine who is rewarded with platforms, media attention, books and professional status for promoting these narratives. O'Sullivan has become the ultimate sickfluencer, fulfilling what she criticises others for.

"Sickfluencer" is a largely media-created term to demonise people who have to seek out help with the labyrinthine benefits claim system from fellow disabled people online, because there's basically fuck all help otherwise.

Today is one of those days where I’m just counting down the minutes until I can take the next dose of pain relief tablets. Been in a pain flare/crash for c. 3 weeks now. Today I spent a total of two hours out of bed.
