440km today again groggy…
rode through Zugspitz-Region, Fernpass (boring), Flüelapass (way better, rd 2.400m), Davos, Landquart, Walensee, Zürich back home - 1st 2h were up to 25°, the rest up to 38° C - not fummy. Some traffic jams incl. Good: Explored some new sideroads…

Just one quick run to the grocery store on Thursday. Sideroads still awful with temps in teens. My plan to go to Pennsylvania for my dearest friend's funeral (2k miles round trip) fizzled. Just finished watching memorial service on Zoom. 🕯💔

When I went to North Carolina, we drove through the hollars and little Mountainside sideroads. Very much reminded me of this movie and Wrong Turn. So many shacks and abandoned cars…

I rode this yesterday for the first time and thought it was fantastic. You still have to be on guard for motorists turning into sideroads but an otherwise friction free and protected route into the city centre for people that want to travel by bike.

Dunno - but I suspect there's a couple of factors?

1. Clarity and consistency of signage. If you're driving along a residential road, and joining/crossing sideroads do NOT have 20mph zone signs ... you can assume you're in a 20mph zone 😜. If there ARE 20mph zone signs - you're in a 30/40 limit.

They work really well on Japanese roads. I imagine little French sideroads too. A bit of effort to drive them around here, but people don't mind if you're a bit slow.

We like just driving around sideroads looking for beautiful places and animals to take photos of. Yesterday we saw a deer and these falls. I believe they are Furnace Falls in or near Minden, Ontario.

A starting point for Idaho stops: make them legal on all roads with speed limits say 40kmph or less.

Bonus for drivers: smaller/sideroads become nicer and faster for cyclists, so at least a few of us will switch away from main roads.

A clear win-win.

though there was still slush on the sideroads, the main roads were mostly clear. i drove to the post office but went back home immediately lol. i'm sewing up my dress for twice, trying to decide between taking the train or paying highway robbery for parking at the venue.

The margin in that riding is enormous. He's running there because it would be nearly impossible to lose. And Fanjoy took two-and-half years to pound the sidewalks and sideroads to make this happen. They are doing this to make certain he will be back in the House.
