Sinamay Straw comes in flat sheets that are then shaped over wooden blocks or molds to make hats. This one is what I call a brimmed cloche, in brown and black sinamay straw. Handmade Millinery

#memadeMay #Millinery 😊 I love making hats - love wearing them too. Here is an odd assortment of me-made hats - a Mad Top Hat made of video tape, an eggtravaganza of sinamay, a 1920s cloche and a wire frame supporting red chunky knitting 🧶 more in Alt Text #hatmaking #hat #knitsky #handknitting

That’s called sinamay, comes in all the colors and textures. This one is striped but you knew that already!

Actually I’m wrong I think that’s a polyester crinoline. Sinamay is made from straw and is more like a fine weave straw fabric. Synthetic crinolines replaced horsehair as manufacturers got up to speed with new materials

Haven’t posted a pirate hat in a while so here’s one I made a few years ago. Navy blue sinamay base tricorn with a dark blue grosgrain ribbon, metallic gold trim, and green and blue ostrich plumes with peacock eyes and a forest green ribbon rosette.

Throwback Wednesday? For day six of #ArtAdventCakendar, the first hand blocked hat I made in 2015. The sinamay hibiscus was my own construction too.

A hat I made, based on a hat that Queen Elizabeth II had worn, just in a slightly different color (the OG was pink)

Sinamay base, in blue and black that combines into navy, cream sinamay trim, with blue satin, silk flowers, and hand beaded. All stitched and made by hand

True. Yeah, some dress materials do seem like piña. I just had a thought that this hat & the hat from the black outfit with the gold pattern on the jacket collar (Brocade? Not sure.) could be made from sinamay, which is finished abaca aka Manila hemp. I know that fancy hats are made from sinamay.

Looking back at my files for #OldWorkWednesday, I forgot that I didn't really start drawing again until 2015.

Other than sketches for my primary form of art expression at the time: millinery work. An art form I'm sure I will come back to in time.

I loved teaching my introduction to millinery course at Gartmore House last week. My student had never made a hat before and I was very impressed by the quality of her work in the 2 hats she completed. Want to learn to make a hat? My next courses at Gartmore are in April and September 2025

spent a good half hour trying to get this origami/paper flower onto a sinamay base to get it onto thin hairband, yeah gave in and sewed it directly onto a thicker hairband which worked! ^.^
