Fully unhinged and brilliant two and a half hour madness featuring Rian Treanor leading hundreds of local Roma youth cutting up and freestyling next-level hardcore sounds, throwing wild tracks mixed with hyper-local styles of Uprising, Makina and tweaked-out 2x2 Singeli in real deal Rotherham style, with additional input from mentors Roc (EVOL), Lord Spikeheart, Modern Institute, Petronn Sphene, and Porter Brook. Trust it’s exceptionally hard, exhilarating stuff for anyone into DJ Niraha, Carl Stone, DJ Travella. After minting his label with Rotherham Sight & Sound - a trio of blind and partially sighted pensioners making screwed electronic music - Rian Treanor’s Electronic Music Club returns with this double set from participants at Roma youth clubs in Eastwood & Ferham, Rotherham. Organised over the past three years by DJ Jozik (a Ukrainian refugee and Roma youth worker), the workshops showed local Chave (Roma kids) such as Roma Jilo Band and Nikolas Band how to remix and tear apart tunes they would hear at home, resulting in hyper hybrids of modern folk with makina/bounce and the sort of rapid-fire Tanzanian singeli which has fed forward into work by Rian and his dad, Mark Fell, in recent years.   Frankly, ‘dźivo droma’ is an absolute brain-fry. From the first side of Relentless Youth Club scything thru strands of singeli with makina-style MCing, to hammering turbofolk, romantic strings and a sloshing knees-up, to a final tape of batshit makina in the style of EVOL, the closing shocker packs some of the most joyous dance music you’ll hear this year. Pete Murch, aka Porter Brook, likewise spurs Clifton Learning partnership to flex their skills in a slew of rugged raps and warp speed turbofolk, and ringleader Jozik steers DJ Boris & Roma Jilo Crew to the set’s most impressive MCs and faithful takes on Roma music. It lands at a time when Roma music and culture is unusually prominent, from Rosalía’s interpolations on the pop level, to the scintillating keyboard showmanship of DJ Niraha’s take on Greek Roma wedding tunes, and when their lingo has become a key part of working class northern english: “Chave” as root of “charver”, meaning bairn or young ‘un in North Eastern dialect (or bastardised as you know what by blerts), and “mush” adopted across the north as new form of “mate” or "bro". When paired with the instinctive nods to road-level makina/bounce and its East African parallels in singeli, Rian and crew effectively demonstrate how dispossession and relative outsider cultural status often prompt the most vital, upfront music.
