It’s raced crits, in cyclocross national championships, been turned into a singlespeed, then a two-speed, fenders on, fenders off, ripped through downtown with piddly little lights after beers at the Downer and trudged through snow to the old _VeloNews_ offices for a decade’s worth of winters. Everyone has a Cannondale story. And today, we’re all telling them, because that’s what you do at a moment of loss. Enormous Dutch holding company Pon announced that it’s shuttering Cannondale’s US headquarters. The brand isn’t dead; it is absolutely on life support. It's currently unknown whether Cannondale staff will have the opportunity to move to the brand's European offices in Woudenberg, the Netherlands, which will become its new global HQ, but a WARN notice filed in Connecticut lists 143 layoffs across a range of roles from engineering to marketing. Pon has been a decent steward of brands like Cervélo and Santa Cruz, but news like this strongly suggests one thing: Most of the people in charge of making sure Cannondales are still Cannondales aren’t going to be there anymore. Which means Cannondales will continue to be something, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be what we want them to be. At least we have our stories. * * * I was 14.
