The best way to face this, IMHO, isn't to try to argue with this preference. It's just to say, "Fine, but you have to pay full freight". There's nothing wrong with liking suburbia, you're free to put up an SFH anywhere you like; the sin is trying to stop your neighbor from putting up a sixplex.
One of the tensions my urbanism has to face is meeting my highly diverse neighbors in the Charlotte suburbs and realizing that a lot of people still really, really like suburban living.

Welcome to Kindred! A six home houseplex in the heart of walkable, bikeable, transitable VicWest in #yyj. These homes took 30 months for rezoning and permitting and 18 months to build. Now this building is home to 15 adults and children of all ages.

If 20% of Seattle’s 165,000 single family zoned lots became a sixplex we will have added 165,000 new homes in that zone alone. This is why incremental upzones are a joke, if any of those lots builds an ADU (because it was the next upzone) it’s locked in place for 50 years even if it’s upzoned again

Spokane has passed several upzonings & housing reforms—eliminating parking minimums near transit, increasing height maximums, reducing lot minimums, allowing more missing middle, & expanding property tax exemptions for new apts—and now they have record construction even amidst high interest rates

It is such a Seattle thing to blow all your political capital advocating for 900 homes downtown when, if you used this effort to simply legalize a sixplex on every lot, you could have advocated for the creation of 200,000 homes
What is Council President Nelson thinking? I do find these technical findings and points of support interesting, but it seems like a lot of burnt political capital for not a lot of benefit. Is this a ploy to keep a few renters away from single-family areas?

Do we want livable, accessible units in neighbourhoods in Toronto? A 3 storey, single stair, elevatored, sixplex is not radical. It should be the most simple, easily replicable way to provide livable housing within neighbourhoods… the “Toronto Special” of the 2020s. And yet…
