The Minneapolis schools were facing a terrifying deficit of $31,000 for the year. (Teachers were getting $850 a year.) And something had to be done. Solicitors were out trying to raise money by direct gifts to keep the school open. So the fads and frills had to go, the school board said, and the schools get back to teaching the "fundamentals." Among the "frills" which the board was ready to dump were Greek and sloyd. In case the latter has just slipped your mind, sloyd was a system of manual training, originally Swedish, which quite naturally would have been transplanted to Minnesota. --Reno Gazette-Journal, 10 April 1958
