We are reliably snowfree by mid-April, with a few rare exceptions. And that is why city golfcourses open in mid-April every year.
If the golfcourses can plan for spring, there is no reason that Jasper and Whyte streetcleaning need to wait another month or more.

January was exceptionally warm and dry in the valley, as all locals will attest.

⚠️Like December, Low elevation snow cover was absent most days. Silver Star (1840 m) snow accumulation is below average.

I know winter maintenance is too much of an ask, but spring maintenance might be a nice start.

...it will still be another month and a bit before our temperatures really start climbing towards spring.
And that's when snow usually really starts to drop, until we're snowfree around two months from now.

...we're at the point of the year where many other years were snowfree (except at Elk Island, which is always really slow).
But some years like 2020, 2018 & 2013 did hang on until closer to April 20th.

The airport averages around 7cm of snow in October, but we didn't get any in 2025, 2024, 2022 or 2021.
2023 got 2.7cm, while a year like 2016 got 22.2cm.

...this is our snowdepth history back to the 60s.
The 2nd charts shows the years which were snowfree on November 22nd.
Blatchford & the airport (with the longest histories) had around 20 years which were snowfree at this point.
So it's not completely unheard of.

Yesterday evening it was white outside. The doorbell rang and there was traffic police asking me wether a certain car was mine. I said no and they responded "are you sure" looking up in their database, but they were at the wrong address.
Today hardly any snow

The airport's last reported snowdepth was 4cm on April 4th, and Stony Plain's was 6cm on April 6th.
Elk Island was still up at 16cm as of the 8th, but it's always slow.

3cm of snow at Edmonton's airport yesterday.
March now has 7.8cm, while it averages around 19cm.
For the whole winter we're at 52cm, when we average around 100cm by now.
And the airport is back to 1cm of snowdepth, after being snowfree for a few days.

...in terms of snow on the ground, we're often snowfree by the end of March or beginning of April.
So in an early year that's a week or 2 away, but in a late year it's maybe 4 or 5.

Recent Mays which were snowfree were 2023, 2016-2018 & 2011-2013.

...on average April gets 13cm of snow. 2025 was snowfree, but most years get at least a bit.
2026 was just above average with with 14.8cm.
But April had 9 days with snow, while the average is only around 5.

About half of the time May is snowfree. The other half will usually be done around the first week or so, but 2011 waited until June 4th.

The last year we didn't had anything. It's funny how weather is working. It was a nice snowfree year last year. This year is different I guess. I want my winter tires 😢 should have changed them sooner.
