I’m a huge Grimes fan, at least I think I still am. I’ve seen her go from a Dune-obsessed kid messing around with softsynths, to a pop producer par excellence, to… this. It’s like watching an Eric Clapton speedrun.

This is me using a drum game peripheral (Taiko no Tatsujin) as a MIDI controller to play actual taiko sounds 💥

The way third party VSTs/plugins don't cooperate with external hardware in FL is a little frustrating
Got a Launchcontrol XL3 and this would be perfect for parameter changes in softsynths but FL can't figure out when I turn a knob :/

Moving to exclusively soundfonts as opposed to softsynths has been really nice for me… it turns out im not That interested in producing texture that way. Im even using the soundfont drum kits…

Falcosoft Midi player for the curious. It supports hardware midi out, or VST/adlib emulation. I use it for external synths.
Foobar2000 + midi player is also great for softsynths (but cant do external)

It's widely accepted among people who care about music that the worst thing about much music these days is that it wasn't made by anyone. Obviously it's MUCH worse to AI-generate it, but there's a spectrum that includes painstaking synth programming in the 70s, to softsynths now, to AI crap...

I'm currently beta testing/factory preset programming for three new softsynths.
It's fair to say that I do NOT envy synth software developers in any way shape or form.
I've often been asked if I'd want to develop my own software synth and the answer is a very clear "Absolutely fucking not!"

One is running a DAW so that he can access the softsynths, the other is showing lyrics and songlists and works as a spare for the first one.
That is how I did it the last time I played live at least.

Playing through shenmue, as I've been wanting to for a while now. I really like the notebook theme, so i made a small higher quality arrangement that doesn't change much from the original. Uses some softsynths with some vsco2 ce samples.

I've never taken up arms in the battle between hardware and software, but I often point to softsynths like SurgeXT, Korg opsix Native, and Noise Engineering's Loquelic Vereor as good reasons to go inside the box

If there was any goal to be had with this post, it was to 1) encourage ppl to try hardware but with managed expectations, and
2) introduce the term "time risk" when designing synth patches 😆. Sometimes HW *reduces* it when compared to softsynths!
