🧵1/2 Petition: Require all car park operators to build green roof and solar panel parking shelters which could reduce the need to use farmland for solar farms and support biodiversity.

France is mandating solar panels on every large commercial car park in the country — turning millions of square metres of idle asphalt into one of Europe's most productive clean energy assets.
I have been mentioning this for months - they are shooting up on all the supermarket car parks.

This is Belgium’s Pairi Daiza, theworld’s largest solar-covered car park:

• 93,000 panels
• 40MW
• 39,899 MWh/yr
• 200,000 m²

Proving: you can scale solar without new land, co-locate generation + parking + EV charging, and turn passive infrastructure into energy assets. ⚡ #Bettrification

As Britain swelters through another heatwave, few people will have heard that ministers have quietly dropped plans for solar carports.

Cars cooler in summer. Shelter from the rain in winter. Clean electricity all year round.

A missed opportunity?

#China has turned an empty stretch of desert into one of the most productive solar sites on the planet. The Tengger Desert Solar Park in Ningxia spans roughly 43 square kilometers and generates over 1.5GW, making it one of the largest single solar installations in the world #ActOnClimate #SolarPower

I, personally, would rather park under vines or solar panels than just leave my car to cook in the middle of baking asphalt

It’s not often that I see something new, but today I did. Picnic tables with solar umbrellas powering charging stations. Good idea!

“Right now, the sun is shining on hundreds of thousands of car parking spaces across the country which could be used to power our homes and businesses” - Miliband

Gov to launch a call for evidence on requiring solar canopies to be built over outdoor car parks.
Every new car park may have to be covered with solar panels
Solar canopies would be compulsory under proposals estimated to save £28,000 on electricity bills at an 80-space car park

TBH I like solar canopies over car lots because it's awesome when you can park your car in the shade and it doesn't get hot.
Solar canopies over car lots are a terrible idea relative to just sticking them in a field somewhere but it is an idea that will never ever ever die because it’s like catnip for boomers
"France passed a single law and instantly unlocked 11 gigawatts of #solarenergy — without using new land. In 2023, France's government mandated solar canopies over all car parks larger than 80 spaces. The scale was enormous: There are 400,000 parking areas across France #ActOnClimate #Renewables

"A solar farm on a rewetted peatland is home to more types of bird than drained agricultural fields nearby, suggesting that land used for renewable energy can make money for landowners, lock away carbon and boost biodiversity at the same time."
Wildlife thrives in solar farm built on restored peatland
A diverse range of bird species has been recorded at a solar park on rewetted peatland in Germany, suggesting that combining energy generation with habitat restoration could benefit biodiversity, the climate and the economy

Before we cover another inch of prime farmland in solar panels we should cover every supermarket and retail park car park in solar.

Who agrees?

Well that was extremely cool. Loved seeing all the locals coming out to experience it together too 🌞

I visited Hodag Solar Park in Rhinelander to hear about their work to deliver affordable, reliable clean energy as the first large-scale solar facility in the Northwoods.

As a state, we've approved enough solar projects to power over 1 million homes with more on the way.
