Hutchins Doodlebug
The Hutchins Doodlebug is a solidbody electric guitar with an offset shape and double cutaways. It's got four humbuckers, and each one has its own on/off switch mounted diagonally above it. There's also a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 5-way blade switch that controls a tone circuit. (I can't find much info on what it does exactly. I've also seen versions of this guitar with a rotary tone switch and with no switch at all.) This guitar has a stop tailpiece, but I've seen ones with a Bigsby. The fret markers are two parallel white lines that run the full width of the fret, and the headstock is a Fender-ish 6-in-line.

Pairs-Battle of the solidbodies: Danelectro vs Harmony

#Guitar #Silvertone #Danelectro #Harmony
Over the years, we've had requests to compare guitars or sometimes they just got randomly photographed together. So we're showing a few of these photos. These two were photographed 20 years ago. Time sure flies when you're having a good time! The battle of the solidbodies: Both Silvertones. Danelectro-made 1450 with 2 lipstick pickups, tremolo & tone/volume controls for each pickup with a toggle for neck, both, & bridge pickups. The Harmony made 1478 (H19-Harmony's equivalent model) has two Rowe-DeArmond pickups, tremolo, and tremolo & tone/volume controls for each pu with a toggle for neck, both, & bridge pickups. The Harmony is a slightly thicker body than Danelectro. So it's a little heavier/bulkier. Both have 6-inline tuners and a similar headstock. Which ends up in your studio?Description from VintageSilvertones.com

CUSTOM-MADE WILD-STYLE ELECTRIC GUITAR - 1pu walnut solidbody electric guitar Maker Unknown USA 1965. For sale.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! A custom-made guitar with spooky details to make sure Every Day Is Halloween!

www.vintagesilvertones.com/product/cust...

#VintageGuitar #Guitar #DeArmond
HAPPY HALLOWEEN from VintageSilvertones.com! Shown in the composite is a custom-made “Wild-style” electric guitar with one pickup, walnut solidbody from circa 1965. Another truly unique, one-of-a-kind homemade electric guitar from the hills of Appalachia. This may have been a luthiers first project or a home-hobbyist woodworker stretching their skills. Either way it is well put together but needs some refinement if you’re going to play it regularly. The bridge butts right up to the pickup in order to intonate it. The action is medium, possibly slightly high but playable. The neck is wide. So if you like a fat-baseball-bat style, this is your guitar. It’s great for open-chords but might need a refret if you’re going to play up the neck regularly. The electronics are all mounted on a piece of wood-grain Formica. The body is what makes it truly unique and feels like a precursor to the wild Teiscos or later the BC Rich’s. You can play this guitar as is or strip it of the vintage parts for your own project. The pickup, tuners, knobs, tailpiece, and strap-pin are all worth the listed price.Description from VintageSilvertones.com The guitar is playable and the electronics work correctly. The DeArmond pick sounds great and the tone and volume controls work properly. The jack is 1/8 inch. So a cord with adapter is included to make it playable out of the box. (Or, just pop over to Radio Shack to get the actual cord!) The pickup is very strong with a great raw twang to it. It’s definitely the kind of guitar that gets attention when played live or in the studio. It will also work well as a slide guitar. It’s definitely a fun guitar to play and will work for a variety of styles that needs a bold, twangy tone.Description from VintageSilvertones.com

Over the years, we've had requests to compare guitars or sometimes they just got randomly photographed together. So we're going to show a few of these photos. Today is an Airline 7270 resoglas hollowbody guitar versus a Silvertone 1479 solidbody. The Airline was made by National/Supro/Valco in Chicago. The Silvertone was made by Harmony in Chicago. Supro single-coil pickups with gold plate glued to the top versus Rowe DeArmond gold plastic top single-coils. Both gritty, Rockers to get you through the night! Silvertone has a tremolo. Airline is a fixed tailpiece. Both from the mid-1960s and still sounding excellent today. The Silvertone has sold. The Airline is available for purchase.Description from VintageSilvertones.com

Nice! That's an interpretation of the Airline Lafayette which was originally a reso-glas guitar. I'm assuming that's a solidbody wood guitar? The originals were only in red.

Just did a search for that guitar. It's clearly taking inspiration form the Alembics. It looks like there's a few models a MC200, MC300 and MC500. They're nice looking solidbody guitars. Could def be fun.

Detail photographs of a Silvertone 1411 1pu solidbody red electric guitar made by Kay of Chicago in 1965. Shown is the control cavity with pots and jack mounted on its underside. The body cavity with the pickguard removed to show interior space for the electronics. The guitar has one hot pickup that cranks. It's a beginners guitar with a really nice, thick neck. The neck is straight and all the electronics work properly. The action is set medium-fast. It plays really well especially for the low-end of the Silvertone line. This is definitely a collectors and/or players guitar. There's a few scratches/minor belt wear and a couple of minor nicks but overall it's in great condition.Description from VintageSilvertones.com

At what point did some weirdo at Gibson go "If we can sell one solidbody for every three weirdoes trying to sell us on this concept we can probably call it a successful product"

APP 68
OW Appleton brought a solidbody guitar to Gibson in 1943, but they didn't want anything to do with it. (I've posted it before! It's called the App.) However, after Leo Fender's Telecaster became really popular in the early 1950s, Gibson wrote him a letter basically saying they should've listened to him. Imagine what the world would be like if they'd made a version of this guitar that Appleton built in 1968! It's an electric guitar with a double-cutaway body shape that starts narrow at the end and gets wider the closer to you get to the neck joint. This is done so you won't have anything to whack your elbow on. The bridge cover also functions as an arm rest, and there are two rubber bumpers at the end of the body so you can lean your guitar against the wall without damaging anything. Two chickenhead-style knobs (one volume and one tone) control the transistorized pickup that's hidden under the large formica pickguard. The plexiglass fretboard has slanted frets (4 years before the Rickenbacker 480!) and ends in a curve, giving the three treble strings extra frets. The neck ends in a fairly normal 3/3 headstock. (PICTURE NOTE: This guitar is right handed, but it's laying with the neck pointing to the left and the body pointing to the right because this was the best picture I could find of it. I could've flipped it 180 degrees, but the angle at which the picture was taken would've made it look funny.)

AIRLINE 7214 AMP-IN-CASE - one pickup, black solidbody electric guitar made by Supro/Valco of Chicago IL in 1964. These were direct competitors (although never produced in the same numbers) to Sears/Silvertone amp-in-case guitars (models: 1448 & 1457) with a thinner body, simplified tone and volume controls on the guitar. And, one jack, one volume control, and a fuse on the exterior of the amp-in-case. These did not open up like the Silvertones; which opened like a book and stand vertically. The guitar slides into the case with the neck behind the speaker. They made one and two pickup versions of the guitar kit. This one suffered some damage along the way and the lower cutaway has been chipped. (Calling Pete Shelley!)Description from VintageSilvertones.com

SILVERTONE 1375 - 1pu red-vinyl solidbody metal truss rod Danelectro Neptune NJ 1954. For sale.

The day got away from me; too many items on the agenda. So here's the workbench from yesterday. cheers!

www.vintagesilvertones.com/product/silv...

#VintageGuitar #Guitar #Silvertone #Danelectro
Silvertone 1375 (early U1 series) made by Danelectro of Neptune New Jersey in 1954. It's a solidbody electric guitar with an aluminum bar that runs from the headstock through body. It has a red tolex covering on the body and a white headstock with red Lightning Bolt Silvertone logo on the headstock. It has one pickup, one volume, one tone control and a toggle switch to change the tone. The white plastic pickguard that has the electronics on it including the pickup has a few chips. (See photos). The pickup is strong and sounds great. The volume control works correctly. But, the tone control does not work. Also, it's a bit scratchy sounding. So some small electronics work will need to be done. That's reflected in the price. Otherwise it's very clean but does show some wear around the body edges, a cigarette burn on the headstock, and the paint is worn off on the neck from 70+ years of playing. Photos tell the story. It appears to be all original. No case or gig bag but it will be double-boxed for shipping.Description from VintageSilvertones.com
