Ghormley getting SOPAC because FDR didn't want him to lose his 3rd star lives rent free in my brain

like the difference between say the Malaya or Philippine Campaign and SoPac is jaw-dropping!

more DOUBLE VICTORY... this time a peek into the coming crucible of the South Pacific... but not the SOPAC campaign we know

I need to get more SOPAC/SWPA nerds in my orbit because I'm deliberating some Decisions™

kinda ignoring pacific stuff because i need to think about what happens in SOPAC a bit more

mulling now whether i want the big dramatic allied offensive in late 42 in SOPAC/SWPA to be recapturing Milne or MacArthur getting his way and going directly for Rabaul
Patton: probably tops out at corps or general command, likely runs a couple of CCs/Armored Brigades straight into ATGM traps

MacArthur: botches attempt to take Rabaul, gets promoted to CINC 'Indian Ocean Areas' as punishment, basically locked out of decision making

Willoughby: light treason

FDR basically knew every single senior admiral in WW2 on a personal level for decades because he had know them when he was assistant SecNav and they were lieutenants during WW1. This leads to stuff like FDR shuffling Ghormley into SOPAC so that he could keep his third star

having USS Lyndon B. Johnson (CG-1002) around when a very confused Senator Lyndon B. Johnson comes a-knocking after his SOPAC tour is quickly wrapped up is actually a fun narrative beat and arguably more important than just an extra heavy
mulling an idea: could replace one of the Saratogas with Zumwalt (it'd be either Monsoor or LBJ)

two major departures in SOPAC (ish) is 17th Army/8th Fleet concentrating on consolidating the north slope of the owen stanleys by seizing Wau and Milne and locking down kokoda instead of going after Moresby

I mean FDR also just hated to fire people, bro nearly fucked up SOPAC because he wanted Bob Ghormley to keep his third star when Stark got shuffled to his G's seat in London
September 24, 2025 at 4:39 AM
namely i think Nimitz replaces Ghormley as soon as he gets back from his SOPAC tour in september or potentially during the tour. but i am not sure if Halsey has fully recuperated by then?
how insane am i? i am trying to wrangle 1942 US Navy office politics

Please come to SOPAC in South Orange, NJ so I can see you life (Brooklyn's a haul from here.)

(G was US Naval Attache to London, but got bounced to provide a soft landing for Harold Stark after he himself got bounced from CNO after Pearl. However, the only VADM billet around for G was SOPAC, so they sent him there so he wouldn't have to be demoted to RADM)

Looking forward to kicking off my March tour in the NorthEast at the beautiful SOPAC in South Orange New Jersey! Grab tickets at my website while they’re hot 🔥

Also the SoPac command structure with Vandy having to ask Turner (the world's biggest asshole) for access to the rest of his division is fascinating
June 24, 2026 at 11:00 PM
The Fleet knew that SOPAC wouldn't be the same. That their actions would have consequences, but they didn't expect things to get this bad this fast.

The maelstrom is starting

Ark Royal joins SOPAC in DVTL.

She narrowly avoids sinking in December 1941, and gets refit in the US before being sent to the Pacific as a concession for the US giving up ROUNDUP and agreeing to GYMNAST

I think these comparisons are generally unhelpful. Too much depends on timing and circumstance. TF 17 was a very different beast from SOPAC, which was very different again from Fifth Fleet. And as similar as Third and Fifth fleets were, they were also different (especially if we consider Leyte).

Yet those highs in SoPac were matched by the very low lows later in the war. Spruance understood the changing character of the fight, but Halsey did not.
June 24, 2026 at 2:42 AM
I don’t think Spruance or Fletcher could have brought the determined resolve that Halsey brought to SOPAC. Does that count as “carrier command”? I’m not sure, but I’d say so. The judicious use of Enterprise in November 1942 was important.

two corollaries for this are (1) truman commitee might end up handling the certs (perhaps a sub-committee) and (2) LBJ is definitely the congressional pointman for handling things, because he's putzing around in SOPAC when the Departure happens
DVTL realization: LBJ is extremely likely to be on the Truman Committee
