Email from FSU re-featured on domestic Telegram ecologies. Elation over the 2 appointments (Race Relations, and HRC) is palpable. Prima facie, suggests Govt deeply influenced by FSU - mindful of how FSU also took sole credit for swarming/shutting down SOSMP consultations on hate speech regulation.

It’s pretending to do something about the issue without actually doing anything about it in actuality.

There are both existing international models & collaborations we could be doing. Plus we were already moving towards such with the DIA SOSMP research & proposed reforms being consulted on.

Studying swarm dynamics of far-right/disinfo networks directing followers to overwhelm public consultations with conspiratorial swill (SOSMP, Treaty, Hate Crimes, C-19 Phase 1, & esp. Phase 2, now RSE) worry NZ policymakers don't know enough about/can't deal with inauthentic input received at scale.

Had SOSMP not been cancelled at the end of 2023, we might have had an online media regulation body in place by now that could have dealt with actual (not quasi) regulation in an effective manner. This would not have dealt with the impacts to Ardern of course, but we'd not be in limbo still.
NetSafe (a quasi-regulator and government funded dispute resolver) and NZTech (an industry body) have no business sharing legal representation.
Absolutely fuck "Netsafe" #NZPol

The thing is, there ARE things in this bill that COULD be a starting point for proper online media regulation (insert obligatory SOSMP reference here) BUT there are no requirements on social media and tech giant firms for enforcement. They're not required to do anything beyond the age ban.

Don't get me wrong, we need good online media regulation in Aotearoa New Zealand ... this is something I have been advocating for, for years now (literally, I've been on TV saying this). But DIA's SOSMP model was the best recent hope we had for that (was actually a good model) and it got canned.

I've studied for a long time how online public consultations on divisive issues, including climate change, have been commandeered by highly organised NZ disinfo networks. Perfunctory or performative public consultations, like SOSMP by DIA, only help secure an official bias. bsky.app/profile/sanj...
Wrote this on 31 July 2023 - the last day of this DIA consultation. Two other large disinformation networks encouraged their members to submit comment, including through the provisioning of templates to copy/paste or light edit, and send. Public consultations are *fundamentally* broken in NZ today.

What we could be doing is regulating online media in the same way that we seek to regulate content on other media technologies, as was envisioned by the Safer Online Services and Media Platforms (SOSMP) review, which has effectively been ignored since it was completed.

It could be indeed. BUT we have no evidence of this broader regulatory arrangement, no discussion, not even an announcement of future work.

We’ve honestly had nothing of substance since SOSMP was hurriedly canned in 2024, and further the cuts to DIA suggest they might not be resourced to do this.

Harvey's position is that content like Christchurch, Uvalde, Buffalo or Norwegian mass killer's violent screeds are made freely available, with harms determined only after it is manifest. Quite incredible! His opposition to NZ's SOSMP regulations was unsurprising. www.dia.govt.nz/media-and-on...
