Ｆ夫人像 (Portrait of Mrs. F) by 安井曾太郎 / Sotaro Yasui (Japanese) - Oil on canvas / 1939 - Artizon Museum (Tokyo, Japan) #womeninart #art #oilpainting #安井曾太郎 #SotaroYasui #Yasui #artwork #洋画 #JapaneseArt #womensart #portraitofawoman #portraitofalady #JapaneseArtist #アーティゾン美術館 #fineart #artoftheday #安井様式
This portrait of a sophisticated modern Japanese woman with short wavy black hair wearing a light gray striped two-piece skirt suit, billowing black lace scarf, and a pink hat with red ribbon while seated with her legs crossed (exposing her knee and part of her leg) and looking slightly away from us is by Japanese artist Sotaro Yasui (安井曾太郎) who became famous as a portrait painter with his 1934 works “Portrait of Mr. Tamamushi” in the collection of Tohoku University and “Portrait of Chin-Jung” in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Thereafter, commissions for portraits like this one never ceased. The stylish woman depicted here is Fukushima Keiko (福島慶子), an essayist and the wife of the art collector Fukushima Shigetaro (福島繁太郎). The Fukushimas spent the 1920s mainly in Paris and London, acquiring many works by contemporary artists such as Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Pablo Picasso, and brought them back to Japan. While in Paris, they had asked French artist André Derain to paint a portrait of Keiko, but her ill health prevented its execution. Regretting that lost opportunity, they selected Yasui to paint her portrait after returning to Japan. Keiko began to visit Yasui’s atelier in Mejiro, Tokyo, and model for him. Yasui was usually mild-mannered, but, when painting, he directed a fierce, even terrifying gaze at his models. Keiko wrote that it was exhausting. Also, Keiko deliberately wore a suit with narrow stripes that would be difficult to paint, testing Yasui’s abilities with a “costume that would be Yasui’s downfall.” However, Yasui found that challenge aroused his ambition creating an unspoken game between artist and model, which can be felt in this painting. The Fukushimas were quite satisfied with the portrait and became close friends with Yasui. From the latter half of the 1930s, Yasui began using vivid gorgeous colors that became known as the “Yasui style” (安井様式) and remain popular to this day.

婦人像 (Seated Woman) - 安井曾太郎 Sōtarō Yasui (Japanese) - Oil on canvas / 1930 - 京都国立近代美術館 National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto, Japan) #womeninart #art #洋画 #oilpainting #安井曾太郎 #JapaneseArtist #京都国立近代美術館 #SotoroYasui #YasuiSotaro #beauty #bskyart #portraitofawoman #美人 #MoMAK #きもの #womensart #JapaneseArt
Seated Woman (婦人像) by Japanese artist Sōtarō Yasui (安井曾太郎) is a “western-style” oil on canvas painting depicting a young Japanese beauty wearing a purple and pink striped kimono with floral obi, sitting in a large wooden chair. It was used as one of ten ¥80 yen postage stamp in Japan in 2012 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. The painting is expressive as Yasui uses broad brushstrokes and blocks of bold (almost saturated) color to create a sense of form and fluidity. The combination of the woman's attire, posture, and the simple background creates a feeling of stillness and quiet, yet unsettled, contemplation. The woman with short black hair styled in a “modern” bob and wearing brilliant red lipstick and nail polish is stunningly beautiful in a vibrant purple and pink striped kimono with a floral-patterned cream colored obi (sash) plus geta (Japanese sandals). She sits calmly with her hands clasped in her lap and her gaze is directed away from us. The chair is a dark-colored, simple wooden chair with a slightly curved back and vertical spindles. Yasui was born to a merchant class household in Kyoto, but dropped out of high school against his family's wishes to pursue a career in the arts. He studied oil painting at the Shōgōin Yōga Kenkyujō and Kansai Bijutsu-in. In 1907, at 19, he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. Forced to return to Japan with the outbreak of World War I, in 1915, he made his debut at the Nikakai Exhibition, where he displayed forty-four paintings he had made in Paris. For the next ten years, Yasui suffered from recurring health problems and did not participate in exhibitions, but did perfect his style, which incorporates clear outlines and vibrant colors, combining western realism with softer touches of traditional nihonga techniques. In 1930, he displayed these techniques in "Seated Woman." Yasui was nominated for membership in the prestigious Imperial Fine Arts Academy in 1935.

In my paper with @mperlman.bsky.social and Sotaro Kita (published in Gesture last week benjamins.com/catalog/gest...) we show that infants can create their own iconic gestures, producing their first iconic gesture between 12 and 20 months! Gestures varied in level of conceptual difficulty.

[Tears on the Last Ball] Hayate Ventures Shizuoka's Sotaro Iketani Shows Soulful Fastball Strikeout in Retirement Game! - AI野球まとめ
Sotaro Iketani, a former Yokohama DeNA BayStars pitcher for Hayate Ventures Shizuoka who announced his retirement after this season, made his final appearance in the home season finale against Seibu. Taking the mound in the 6th inning as the second pitcher, he threw exclusively fastballs to a single batter, striking him out swinging with his utmost pitch. During the post-game ceremony, he was moved to tears receiving bouquets from his mentor, seniors, and family, and was tossed into the air three times by his teammates. Surrounded by warm applause from about 1,500 fans in the stands, he stated it was a game he would never forget, hanging up his glove with a heart full of emotion. Meanwhile, the team lost the final game 1-3, finishing their third season since joining the league at the bottom of the Central Division with 37 wins, 81 losses, and 4 ties. Although they fell short of their preseason goal of 50 wins, they surpassed last year's win total, and Manager Motoyuki Akahori looked forward to connecting this frustration to next season.

Congratulations to Kirsty Green on passing her viva! Kirsty’s PhD, supervised by Prof. Sotaro Kita, explored how iconicity - when a word or gesture resembles what it means - supports early communication. She found caregivers using iconic words sparked greater engagement from infants.
