#NowSpinning in the strange soundworld of Prokofiev’s Third Symphony. Chailly’s Concertgebouw are holding nothing back here. It’s not a work we talk about very often, but there’s tons to enjoy in it.

Sibelius’ Kullervo was premiered on 28 April 1892. It is astonishing to think the soundworld Sibelius created with this work effectively came from nowhere. With it Sibelius defined a new idea of what Finnish music might be. What are your favourite recordings of Kullervo?

Welcoming back a whole soundworld with the milder weather.
I’ve opened the big dining room window. Sounds. The wind. Rooks. Robin song. Chatter of sparrows. Chronic tinnitus. Airliner overhead. Next door’s hanging doorbell in the gusts. Rattle of the window catch. Rattle of a magpie. Song thrush. Skylark. A fly-past of finches. A pheasant hiccoughing.

Been getting deeper into the soundworld of Arthur Russell than ever before with the help of Richard King's fascinating biography and these cassettes from Audika Records.

I had the pleasure of reading this book in manuscript and enjoyed it hugely.

It's a really original and engaging take on the soundworld of Chartism - itself one of the great subjects of modern British history.

Warmly recommended to anyone with an interest in Britain's greatest democratic movement.
Very exciting to see the first book in our Radical Histories series out in print- David Kennerley’s sonic history of Chartism @katrinanavickas.bsky.social @manchesterup.bsky.social

#NowSpinning Vaughan Williams’s Christmas Cantata, Hodie. If you don’t know this work and love the soundworld of, say, Job then you would be in for a treat. There are excellent versions out there and this is definitely one of them.

'Quaristice shows the duo as miniaturists rather than maximalists. Each of its twenty (relatively) short tracks feels like a single tessera of a mosaic which, once completed, shows the full range of the Autechre soundworld.'
