The Romans did however have right wing fools who expressed disgust at non-Latin speakers or took pride in knowing no other languages. Cato the elder studied Greek extensively but publicly portrayed himself as contemptuous of Greek speakers...a Roman version of corn pone Senator Claghorn Kennedy.
