1/6 🧵 I'm building what might be the smallest #opensource #spectrometer with an easy to use UI! I call it a pocket spectrometer. Combining #M5StickC (~$20) with AS7341 sensor (~$16). My goal? A complete spectrometer that is barely larger than a sample cuvette itself.

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

It’s bad enough that it tries to flatter you by telling you you’re asking such good and insightful questions. But desperately egging you on to try to make you spend more tokens is just gross. Like if every time you ran a mass spectrometer it tried to upsell you on some more advanced analysis.

You weren’t supposed to push the sample INTO the anti-mass spectrometer! Oh GOD! OH FU
A videogame thing I like is when the videogame goes “press A to fire missile” and does not give you any options to not fire the missile and the only way to proceed is to fire the missile so you fire it and the rest of the game is people being like “you fucking monster…you fired the missile”

The janitor in the old geochemistry building at @lamont.columbia.edu showed us how to reheat pizza using waste heat from the mass spectrometer.
Climate and environment hivemind, I'd like to pick your brain. There has been lots of talk about using the waste heat from data centres to do something useful, but does anyone know of a project now in the UK where this is actually happening? I'd love to know who's doing it if so. Thanks!

Setup 5 prism spectrometers with ratings plus one constant deviation spectrometer all for 6th form. All but one of these instruments over 100 years old.🧪
