A macro close-up captures a tiny, fuzzy jumping spider clinging upside down to the bright green stem of a wildflower. The spider looks directly forward with its two large, prominent center eyes catching a metallic reflection. Its body and legs feature intricate, zebra-like patterns of black, white, and brown hair. Above the spider, a single large white petal curves over the orange, textured center of the flower bloom, all set against a stark, solid black background.

It's pride month, so let's talk about tarantulas' rainbow paws!🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!⬇️🧵

#spider #arachnid #biology #tarantula #iridescence #bugsky #invert
Tarantulas have rainbow paws! One of the most unexpected things you’d find by looking at a tarantula is the presence of iridescent setae on the last segments of their legs. This body coverage, by reflecting certain wavelengths, colors the tip of their legs in hues of multiple colors, almost like a lil’ rainbow. Believe it or not, this feature isn’t uncommon among spiders, and is especially visible on true tarantulas (Theraphosidae), on whose it can easily be seen with a spider in a defensive stance.

Is #SpiderSaturday a thing? It should be. Here is a Florida orbweaver (Argiope florida) in the Fall Line Sandhills of Taylor County, GA, July 2021. Also, I'm declaring it #SandhillsSaturday.

#Spiders #Invertebrates #BugSky
In the center of the frame, in the center of a web, the ventral (underside) view of a Florida orbweaver spider (Argiope florida). The spider's abdomen is black with white and pale yellow markings, and her legs are long, thin, and orange-brown with black and pale yellow bands. She has woven some thicker strands into a stabilimentum of zigzag lines (like a series of Z's), five of them radiating from the center of the web (though not extending all the way to the center), forming an X shape. So, an X made of Z's. The spider rests in the center of the X, her legs almost touching the Z's and forming the rest of the X. In the background behind the web is soft focus green and reddish brown.

Last of the current #JumpingSpiders for #spidersaturday - those Salticus sp. from last weekend's wall safari...

(At some point the weather will warm up again for more bug action! It's currently raining.)

#Derbyshire #spiders #macroPhotography
Black and white stripy jumping spider on a rough old stone wall, facing towards the camera, looking intently downwards with gleaming black eyes, as if ready to pounce. Same spider, a moment later - looking up past the camera. A different black and white jumping spider (a male, judging by the large mandibles and pedipalps?) stalking its way up the landscape of the stone wall - an out-of-focus red mite in the foreground shows just how small this world is. Jumping spider looking up past the camera, at a quirky angle.

For #spidersaturday (which is apparently a thing) - more Salticus sp. photos from last weekend's wall safari.

(From the 'like' counts, people like these little things even more than bees! And vastly more than other spiders eating bees. Ahem.)

#Derbyshire #spiders #JumpingSpiders #macroPhotography
Black and white striped jumping spider seen front-on - large, gleaming black eyes looking past the camera - a magnificent little creature resplendent on its tiny mountain hillside of lichen-encrusted stone wall. Another black and white jumping spider, timidly exploring a slight dip in the stonework. Still another black and white jumping spider - on a near-vertical cliff, facing downwards, but with head raised to inspect something in the distance. Another jumping spider! This one has hairy eyebrows. So awesome.
