My contribution to this years Web Performance Calendar is all about Third Parties and Single Points of Failure (SPOF). Based on @httparchive.org data I found that 67% of websites have at least 1 render blocking third party - and quite a few of them are SPOF risks!

I love going “lol null pointers” as much as the next person, but the systemic factors here are more important.
Sure: No feature flags, normalized deviance, unintended data shape … but the biggest issues seem to be cultural:

I believe the ballpark for a full relay (the most expensive part) is a few hundred dollars a month? the PLC directory is the main SPOF and that's getting fixed real soon.
