Important history lesson for Americans. When the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock, it was met by Squanto... Who spoke fluent English because he had already been enslaved in Spain, escaped to England and then to home. The first American settlers were met by people more cosmopolitan and worldly.

Funny but True: Shortly after they landed at Plymouth, a Wampanoag appeared and asked the astonished Pilgrims, in English, if they had any beer.

His name was Tisquantum, but he’s better known as Squanto. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squanto

Considering Squanto greeted the pilgrims in English, yeah people had been there before.

One of my favorite historical facts: When early colonizers arrived on the shores of what would become New England, they were greeted by Squanto. In English. Because they were already part of a multicultural economic zone.

Happy Thanksgiving!

When Squanto met the Pilgrims, he greeted them in English and asked them if they had any beer.

You can look it up.

Setting all of this aside: America was not yanked out of the primordial ooze by British/Scots/Irish colonials. It was occupied by Natives when settlers arrived, who famously (and self-destructively) helped them navigate the continent, traded with them and taught them to survive.

Me: Oh, we should watch the latest John Wick.

My friend François who watches the 1994 critical and commercial failure "Squanto: A Warrior's Tale" twice a week: You know, if you're looking for a movie about a warrior...
