he slapped SSPX on the wrist over some stuff, but IIRC they didn’t double dog dare him to bring out the big guns by announcing that they planned to elect their own special SSPX-only bishops, the exact thing JPII excommunicated them for in the 80s (one is even the same guy??? Incredible hubris)

The existence of SSPX bishops poses a particular challenge for Catholic ecclesiology, but this is accurate & worth keeping in mind. There are apx 1.3 million "moderately or highly religious" LGBTQ+ Catholics in the US (per an Oct '20 study at UCLA Law) and 600,000 SSPX members (per SSPX website).
There's twice as many "religious Catholics" who identify as LGBT in the US as there are SSPX people world-wide
