#stegosaurids
Now I say most, because there is some evidence that some Stegosaurids made it to the very Early Cretaceous.

So what does Ankylosaurus have to do with that?

Well, Ankylosaurs as a whole were on the rise and filled a very similar niche.

So it’s possible the Stegosaurids were outcompeted.

Is Stegosaurus your favorite dinosaur?

Well it’s possible my favorite dinosaur, Ankylosaurus, is one of the reasons yours went extinct.

See most Stegosaurids went extinct in the Late Jurassic.

Dinosaurs like Kentrosaurus, Dacentrurus, and Stegosaurus all lived in the Jurassic period.

"We found that the stegosaurids were a very inquisitive group as long as you didn't appear to pose a threat. If you could remain still for long enough, they would frequently come within touching distance.

Actual touching is not advised, as poor Thag Simmons found out..."

stegosaurids are so damn lucky. "thagomizer" is such a cool name for tail spikes, meanwhile anklyosaurids (and some sauropods) and i just get "tail club" for the thing on our tails. come on man

And of course some Stegosaurids, an amazing Hadrosaur head and a lovely Confusciornis bird (I think) complete with plumage.

There is environmental shifts from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous to take into account.

Which would obviously mean a change in plant life, and the decline of their preferred food.

Of course there is so much more that went into the extinction of Stegosaurids, but that is a very long conversation.

The word thagamizer, used to describe the tail spikes on stegosaurids, was not originally the scientific term for it. It was just appropriated by the scientific community from Gary Larson's Far Side comic in 1982.

Side quest 2: in a beautiful ex. of science terms following art, Larson once drew a cartoon of a caveman labelling the tail spikes of stegosaurids as a ‘thagomizer’. Dino folk decided that was better than anything they could come up with and formally adopted it 🤓

Gigantspinosaurus TF
Anyone ever done this one before? Wanted to give one of the more lesser known Stegosaurids some attention.

Other stegosaurids have atomizers too, like Kentrosaurus.

*2nd fave I thought it had a club tail and was an ankylo but I love all kinds of stegosaurids too!

Yes. It is. Stegosaurids had already vanished from the fossil record millions of years before the Chicxulub impact. Half the planet was incinerated 65 million years ago.

this sent me down a pedantry rabbit hole - the earliest butterflies and moths predate the stegosaurids, so a cute lil stego could absolutely have frolicked after some butterflies

I just learned there is a popular sort of theme park in Kentucky where they insist Noah brought 85 dinosaurs on the Ark and now I understand better how we got ourselves into such a mess in the USA now.

I miss Legacy as well..
It was, a time.

Watching TheGamingBeaver… was what this Kentro took to/took inspiration by.. for the longest time.

Right now with the hordetest, my FAMILY is showcased! (Stegosaurids, namely the Kentrosaurus)

Besides that, the Redwoods.
*chef’s kiss*

It brings me back.😭😭😭

For starters, stegosaurids didn't have a single row of big plates. They had two rows of spikes. With a spiked tail. There are ones which had no armor. Please, for the love of all that is decent, effing stop. It doesn't even fucking look like one.

It wasn’t until much later that I designed these, the stegosaurids.

#Stegosaurus #Kentrosaurus
You can see I used a wider rear wheel connector to allow for the longer hind legs. I also used a ball joint on the tail so it can swing as a play feature.

Dino Fact!

Spinophorosaurus (Spine-Bearing Lizard) is a sauropod from Middle Jurassic Africa! Its name refers to how it was once thought to have spiky osteoderms on its tail, akin to the thagomizers of stegosaurids and spiked tail club of fellow sauropod Shunosaurus! This- (1/2)
