This silver groat of James III of Scotland (1484-1488) was one of the 1st coins minted in Northern Europe with a realistic portrait in the Renaissance style. This example from the Lord Stewartby Collection is one of the best preserved I've ever seen.

Had a nice day revisiting a few stations on the Marston Vale line! Certainly going to be interesting to see what this line will look like in 10 years time! Very different is my guess!

This is possibly the only complete set of King James VI & I's 9th Scottish coinage in existence. It was struck from 1605 to 1609 and consisted of 12 denominations that ranged in value from £12 to 6 pence Scots. The coins are from the Lord Stewartby Collection at the Hunterian.

Cutting a 2A scheme of ‘Stewartby’ in endgrain pear.

You’ll hear a lot more about Stewartby in the future as the new Universal Studios theme park is going to be built on the site of what was the biggest brickworks in Europe.

Nice little walk between the 2, both standard stations for the line!

2 more to go, 2 long waits unless we make a 1 min connection with a level crossing, lets see what happens!

This silver penny of Robert the Bruce was minted in Berwick following its recapture from the English in 1318, 4 years after Bruce’s victory at Bannockburn. Bruce’s coins were struck in small numbers so very few remain in existence. This specimen is from the Lord Stewartby Collection at the Hunterian

King James IV of Scotland handled this very coin when he personally distributed it as part of the Royal Maundy ceremony in 1512. It's one of the most incredible objects I've ever held. This specimen from the Lord Stewartby Collection at the Hunterian is one of just three remaining in existence.

This Scottish £20 piece of James VI, minted in Edinburgh in 1575, was the heaviest circulating gold coin struck in the British Isles up to that point. It would hold this distinction until the 1660s. This example is from the Lord Stewartby Collection at The Hunterian, Glasgow.

And instead of turning the Stewartby brick pits into drinking water reservoirs (and mitigating Ouse winter flood risk at the same time) we built a waste incinerator [the UK’s dirtiest source of electricity] and have approved a theme park!

This Scottish silver coin of James VI, dating to 1591, conveyed that the king’s rule was just. It depicts a sword and scales, symbols of justice, surrounded by an inscription that translates to: ‘in these a tyrant differs from a king’. From the Lord Stewartby Collection at The Hunterian, Glasgow.
