HT to @rpmoon.bsky.social who found the opening of The Kindly Ones jarring. I just found the opening of Chap 2 jarring and really really didn't want to return to Morelandland. I was quite happy at Stonehurst, despite ghosts, drama and decoration. #anthonypowelltogether

My affection for this series increased considerably in this volume. I love the Stonehurst section. I feel closer to Nick. I hope we see more of General Conyers (how will he fare with Tuffy?). Giles' death introduced a note of existentialism. And Duport was diverting! Next book could be grim...

Stonehurst is a dour place. A rental, furnished by military owners, devoid of beauty probably utilitarian. No Downton Abbey. Backwater Aldershot, the military town nearby created by the Army, is all business. No wonder boy Nick is captivated by servants' dramas and stories. #AnthonyPowellTogether
