Stratigraphy. They went with stratigraphy. I respect the commitment to geological wordplay, even if the subscription model implications are deeply unsettling.

There's something to be written on the role that the oil field played in opening up the field of geology to women geologists....

It shows up a *lot* in biographies from about the 1920s to at least 1950s. Micropaleontology and stratigraphy might be the key subdisciplines....
November 2, 1998, died #OTD aged 83 years, Mareta N. West. In 1940 she worked as an oil geologist. She was the first woman hired by the American Geological Service in Arizona. As an astrogeologist at NASA she was responsible for choosing the landing site of Apollo 11

The life-length purchases of our parents set them in a stratigraphy they did not choose. All this. All this that has aged with them. Here, the table covered in plastic and wildflower coasters.

taking your innocence
as the couch traps you
between my hardness
and its simple strength
a stratigraphy of senses
while my tongue slides
gliding toward the flame
slow seasonal rawness
to receive such visions
where pain and pleasure
lose their way in turns

Colorado Plateau stratigraphy is much more complex than pancake stratigraphy with overprinting by salt tectonics and the reactivation deep seated Precambrian faults with changing stress fields across the plateau. @utahpaleo-ufop.bsky.social @geosociety.bsky.social www.academia.edu/149060680/DE...

I have no recollection of how this ended up in my possession, but the stratigraphy of the box it came out of suggests Michael Herren might have passed it on to me. #medievalsky

My PhD used spectral photography (photography using infrared and ultraviolet light) to identify chemical differences between glass objects, but I also used it on some of our trenches on Iona to identify charcoal layers in the stratigraphy (the dark blue/purple patches towards the bottom).

It's the archaeology diploma I keep coming back to. Years of stratigraphy and pottery sherds, then a confident paragraph about inflation.

Stratigraphy is genuinely one of the most elegant ideas in science — layers as pages in a book. The unconformities where pages are missing tell just as much of the story as the ones that are there.
