Want to know a city’s priorities? Watch its traffic lights.

At this Delft intersection, pedestrians and cyclists enjoy a continuous green light. Drivers must ask permission to cross the foot and cycle path by triggering a sensor.

Infrastructure shapes how we move. Traffic lights show who we value.

This very cool new book is on my Christmas list!

During lockdown, designer Penny Hardy walked to her office & daily photographed her local streeteries which led her to capture them all over #NYC.

“Suddenly, everyone could be an architect” said Hardy—daughter of beloved NYC architect, Hugh Hardy.

Madams Organ fucking suuuucks. They have an anti-baseball cap policy, and its owner recently came out against streeteries because it makes it harder for people to drive in for a quick shot

They have streeteries all over CDMX. I wonder if CDMX's rich bitch about streeteries taking up parking like the rich do in DC?

Streeteries in Brussels are better than the ones in DC, mostly cause there don’t seem to be any rats. How a city that’s 500+ years old doesn’t have rats is a mystery, but I’m not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.

Bowser has suburban-brain so she hates Real City stuff like streeteries, open streets day, open container, etc and something she excels at it is knowing how to put up beauracratic/process barriers against things she doesn't like ime

"Restler’s bill, which would take effect immediately after an expected mayoral signature, will end the four-month ban by creating year-round outdoor dining permits (as well as seasonal permits if the restaurateur wants a less-expensive option)."

Business in Adams Morgan has plummeted since they ripped those streeteries out.

The number of customers now that it's a high speed road again versus back when it was pedestrian-friendly is just night and day difference.

basically i agree that streeteries are a better use of public space than parking spots. that being said, a lot of the sidewalk huts were accessibility nightmares for people passing by. and it seems like genuine public space would be superior (i.e., you don't have to be 'paying customer' to enjoy)

"“Outdoor dining is about more than restaurant policy. It’s about what we want our streets to be used for: giving people more places to sit, eat, gather, and spend time in their neighborhoods—not simply storing private cars."

Cities moving away from streeteries is one of the stupidest policy trends of late. Harms qualify of life, the feasibility of restaurants, and reduces city revenue. All to make a very small handful of drivers happier (a group that will never be happy).
DC is enforcing a “crackdown” on streeteries—outdoor seating for cafes—charging the cafes huge amounts of money to keep the facilities in place, and forcing them to use seating that doesn’t work in the winter. It’s a huge self-own, likely to end up hurting businesses, reducing street vibrancy.

It's over for many D.C. streeteries, as the city starts to charge what you might call "road rent" and other fees.
