The vintage antibiotic streptomycin might be useful in treating metastatic cancer. A surprising result:

Well streptomycin but yeah

Forgot to add streptomycin to the list (though this isn't widely available in the U.S., and one has to watch for rpsL resistance mutations).

*Yersinia pestis* ist der neue heiße Scheiß!
Man sollte sich bei Gelegenheit damit beschäftigen und vorsorglich für ausreichend Streptomycin und Ciprofloxacin sorgen!

Treatment isn't difficult.
With strict respiratory isolation the first 48 hrs:
Fluoroquinolone + Aminoglycosideis. A combination of: Ciprofloxacin Gentamicin and Streptomycin
Alternative fluoroquinolones:
Levofloxacin, Moxifloxacin

In bioterrorism scenarios: Levofloxacin and moxifloxacin

Petition calls for EPA to ban use of medically important antimicrobials in pesticides

A coalition of groups is asking the agency to ban pesticides containing oxytetracycline, streptomycin, gentamicin, kasugamycin, ipflufenoquin, and triazole fungicides.

Bugie was told it wasn't important for her name to be on the patent as she would "one day get married & have a family."

Waksman wrote articles about 𝗵𝗶𝘀 discovery, rarely mentioning help he'd received. Bugie was eventually awarded 0.2% of the streptomycin royalties. #WomenInSTEM #MatildaEffect 2/2

Many people talk about the "Golden Age of Antibiotics", but I hadn't seen it visualized properly.

Just how many types of antibiotics were discovered during that time?

So, I visualized it myself!

In pneumonic plague, bubos are not present. 'Streptomycin, gentamicin, tetracyclines and chloramphenicol are all able to kill the causative bacterium.' These antibiotics must be administered w/in 24 hours. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumon...

Ikutaro Kakehashi, the founder of Roland and Boss, was very cool.

As a kid he became obsessed with radios, in WW2 he was a sickly kid who'd been orphaned by tuberculosis, shortly afterward he was one of the first humans cured of tuberculosis by streptomycin.

The Streptomyces genus produces lots of antibiotics, hundreds of not thousands of compounds have been described since the first, Streptomycin, which is of course one of the first antibiotics. They're fascinating microbes (6)

The treatment for neumonic plague is a series of antibiotics that must be administered immediately after diagnosis.

"First-line IV or oral drugs: Fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, or aminoglycosides like gentamicin and streptomycin."

Does Russia not have these medications?
October 5, 2026 at 7:11 PM
Active Treatment: For patients who already have active pneumonic plague, guidelines generally favor first-line intravenous (IV) antibiotics such as gentamicin, streptomycin, or fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin).

Before 1942, people died from tuberculosis.

Streptomycin, was discovered in 1943 by Selman Waksman, Elizabeth Bugie, & Albert Schatz at Rutgers University. The first patient was treated with streptomycin in November 1944 & was cured.

🏅Waksman received the 1952 Nobel Prize, for this discovery.

Meh. Not having the same issues with rodents and fleas as they had in the 14th century it’s not quite so serious. Also, streptomycin works well on Yersinia Pestis. There’s been an outbreak in Madagascar for several years and nobody is stopping flights from there.

Biochemist Elizabeth Bugie co-discovered streptomycin (with Selman Waksman), the first antibiotic against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Waksman went on to win the 1952 Nobel Prize for Medicine & took full credit for the discovery. Bugie died #OTD in 2001. #WomenInSTEM #MatildaEffect (1/2)
