STRUCTURES YRC members Manuel Klockow and Peter Lippmann presented their work “A Function-Centric Graph Neural Network Approach for Predicting Electron Densities” at the 14th International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their study introduces a graph neural network-based method, which is currently the most accurate known ML approach for electron density prediction on highly competitive benchmarks. We are pleased to see research supported by STRUCTURES represented at ICLR, one of the leading international conferences in machine learning and representation learning. Congratulations to Manuel Klockow, Peter Lippmann, and all collaborators involved. The International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) is one of the leading international conferences in artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on representation learning and deep learning. It brings together researchers from academia and industry to present cutting-edge work across machine learning, data science, and application areas such as computer vision, computational biology, natural language processing, robotics, and reinforcement learning.

Don’t miss this Friday’s STRUCTURES Jour Fixe! Tim Laux (U. Heidelberg) will speak on “Geometric Flows in Physics, Math, and Data.” Abstract: Geometric flows are ubiquitous! They describe the evolution of interfaces and surfaces in continuum mechanics, can be used for the classification of abstract manifolds, and even emerge in algorithms in data science and machine learning. In this talk, I will show various examples of geometric flows and highlight their common structure. Even in the simplest examples, singularities will inevitably appear. I will show how geometric measure theory allows to make the formal picture rigorous in the presence of these singularities.

Our YRC member Ricardo took part in the 16th International LISA Symposium, held from 21 to 26 June 2026 at the University of Maryland in College Park, USA. The symposium brought together the international LISA community as well as scientists interested in the field to discuss current developments in gravitational-wave astrophysics, with a focus on mission development, theory, and data analysis for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. During the conference, Ricardo gave a talk and participated in a “state of the profession” session on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. His visit also connected to the history of gravitational-wave research. The University of Maryland campus is home to the Weber bars, early attempts to build detectors for gravitational waves that were ultimately unsuccessful. Thanks to the support from STRUCTURES, Ricardo was able to attend the symposium, present his work, and engage with the international scientific community!

Congratulations! STRUCTURES YRC members Nikolas Liebster (alumnus, now at LMU) and Klaus Paschek (MPIA) received this year's Otto Haxel Dissertation Award. The award honours the three best doctoral dissertations in physics at the three institutions associated with nuclear physicist Otto Haxel (1909–1998): KIT, University of Göttingen and Hei­del­berg University. Dr. Liebster received the award for his dissertation on “Pattern Formation and Supersolid Sound Modes in a Driven Superfluid”, completed in the re­search group of Markus Oberthaler at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics (KIP) of Hei­del­berg Uni­ver­si­ty. In his thesis, he investigated how novel steady states emerge in quantum systems far from equilibrium, showing that a periodically driven Bose-Einstein condensate can form a supersolid state. Dr. Paschek received the award for his dissertation “From Space to the Hadean Earth: Prebiotic Synthesis and the Origins of Life,” completed in the group of Thomas Henning at Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA). In his thesis, he investigated how the first building blocks of life may have arisen on the early Earth several billion years ago, showing that both terrestrial chemistry and meteorite delivery could provide viable pathways to key prebiotic molecules.
