Statement Re: OU Discrimination Investigation

Today, my client, Mel Curth, submitted her appeal of the University's Institutional Equity Office finding that she engaged in arbitrary and capricious grading of a student's assignment in violation of that student's religious liberty.

OVER A MILLION USERS

DISCUSS SUICIDE WITH CHATGPT

EVERY *WEEK*

what the fuck are we DOING here
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.

I absolutely will not submit my student’s work to Turnitin for exactly this reason.
You won’t ever convince me that Turnitin isn’t a mass IP theft machine.

And Gen ai marking is just a cheap way of stealing more ideas, feeding each student’s style into the blender and then we wonder why 💯 authentic work gets marked Gen ai.
I would also be *extremely* wary about feeding learners' work into a commercial AI application. In theory, copyright in school work belongs to the *students*. We don't have the right to share it for commercial purposes. AI stealing more copyright?

A friend of mine who was TA’ing for an AmLit course found a copy of Moby Dick a student had left behind. It had only one marginal annotation, around page 100, that simply said “whale is important.”
Love the glimpse into the beautiful mind that notated this used copy of Moby Dick I got

Every Latin 201 student’s first Cicero encounter.
Started a new book I’ve been looking forward to reading. Yay.

The first sentence is a paragraph long and I don’t even know what it’s saying.

Goddammit. Mscheeeeew.
