It indeed is. I'm probably a bit more accustomed than the average person, growing up in a region and a family (my uncle worked for a niche mechanical subcontractor) where it's quite common to meet someone working at one of those, or see adds for industrial vacuum machines at the airport.

Walking through the InnoTrans halls and seeing the product lines of the subcontractor to the subcontractor is absolutely fascinating.

Might as well be infinite depth.

I always hold up my time at a military subcontractor as an example. I can say I got weirdly lucky; my bosses were bigoted enough to keep me from touching production code. I can't say I didn't choose to work at a military subcontractor before to moving in search of work, or changing fields.

No, LINXS itself has the 25 year contract to maintain and operate the system after construction is done. Not a subcontractor. LINXS is itself a kind of joint venture between several entities including Fluor Engineering.

TAs make being a subcontractor look good. I can at least bill for extra work (some of the time).

You shouldn’t also have to constantly worry about where your next cleaner or subcontractor is going to come from.

Someone cancels last minute.

You get extra jobs and suddenly need more people.

You need another cleaner to help on a job site.

ISO 9001 for Transport and Logistics Operators
ISO 9001 for Transport and Logistics Operators
Transport and logistics operations run on tight margins and even tighter timelines. When things go wrong, the cost is not just a delayed shipment. It is lost contracts, damaged goods, compliance breaches, and reputation hits that take months to recover from. ISO 9001 gives logistics operators a framework to get ahead of those problems rather than react to them. Here is what that looks like in practice: Clear process controls for dispatch, warehousing, and subcontractor management. Documented procedures that reduce reliance on individual knowledge. Nonconformance tracking that actually drives improvement. Customer feedback loops built into operations, not just collected and filed away. The standard is not about adding paperwork. It is about making your operation more reliable and easier to audit when customers or regulators come knocking. We have put together a practical guide covering how ISO 9001 applies specifically to transport and logistics, including the clauses that matter most and the common gaps auditors find in this sector. Worth a read if you work in or audit this industry. https://auditworkshop.com/blog/iso-9001-transport-logistics #ISO9001 #TransportAndLogistics #QualityManagement #ISOAuditor #SupplyChain

This week a dental hygienist asked me if I was a working girl and a subcontractor mistook my ankle tattoo as an ankle monitor. Everyone’s first impression of me is quite varied it seems.

Could have used one of these at the factory I used to work in as a foodservice subcontractor. While our staff was diligent, I'd say only about 20% of the laborers, and maybe 75% of the white collar workers, actually used a sink.

Graduate scheme interview. An interviewer arrogantly suggested I was a hooligan ‘cos I was Northern and a Boro fan.

Asked me if I had any experience of working with his company (which I had as a subcontractor) and decided to tell him gleefully how incompetent they were. Loved it 🤣

Microsoft's data center subcontractor in New Jersey illegally runs a bunch of gas "backup" generators on site, figuring they won't get caught or will just eat the wrist-slap fines if they do.

Regulatory enforcement is so bad that a third party had to take drone images to get the state to act.

I work in construction and am based in the Puget Sound area so I have done unavoidable work for some of their local charities as a subcontractor

Why, yes we do have some huge cargo planes, including the C-17 and the C-5, which was designed to carry main battle tanks. Why Lockheed was managing the transfer using a subcontractor I don't know.

I worked for an Aerospace Company in Management 45 years ago and we had a PAC, where the head of Gov relations would brief the money spent on politicians and the subcontractor locations in political districts. It’s still being done today by all the big defense contractors with headquarters in DC!

this is the exact same fight and playbook Uber used to maintain "subcontractor" status for their drivers, circumventing the worker protections afforded to full employees

Thank you!!!

At one point they had me buy replacement belts from Amazon, send them an invoice, and then they refunded me for that purchase like I was a subcontractor. It was the wildest customer service experience I think I have ever encountered.
