We now have about 8 inches of snow, the minimum amount needed to form a proper subnivean layer for the little animals, e.g. mice, weasels. Looks like the snow is here to stay.

What’s the subnivean zone?

Here’s a little bit about this mysterious world beneath the snow.

The melting snow revealed the Subnivean zone where little creatures like voles made tunnels to travel through safe from hawk and owl eyes

What was this vole doing? Choosing to hang out on top of the snow it is a lose-lose choice for winter Meadow Voles. It's colder here and more vulnerable to some predators.
This one skedaddled back to subnivean safety, shortly after this photo. #mammals

More light, fluffy snow overnight, bringing our total to about 10 inches. Makes a good
snow cover so that little animals have a good subnivean habitat. Easier for me to shovel, too!

Did you know that when it snows, a special zone is created called the subnivean zone? This insulated space between the bottom of the snow layer, and the top of the frozen ground provides a safe space for small mammals! Learn all about it here: dnr.illinois.gov/education/at...

SNOW in your garden part 1: the subnivean zone. THE WHAT?!
The subnivean zone is the space between the ground and the snow pack where creatures find food, shelter and warmth. These raised ridges criss-crossing the grass in my front yard are tunnels made by voles. Voles = screech owl snacks ;)

Piling snow makes for a unique habitat: subnivean zones. These spaces are created by sublimation of snow where it meets the earth's surface. Insulated from the winds above, this microhabitat remains a stable temperature despite the cold. 🧪

Please read The Drinking Game. Not because my interactive, autofictional #alcoholism story won the Subnivean Fiction Award. Because it’s probably unlike anything you’ve read before (it’s half story, half game) and might madden & enlighten you. Go on. Just one drink

Meadow Voles approach winter unlike most others. In late fall they go on a diet, lower their reproductive drive and become more sociable.
They'll create tunnels & nests in the subnivean layer - on the ground, but under the snow eating a little bit of stashed item, but finding seeds and grasses.

-The short-tailed shrew weighs about as much as three or four American nickels.
-Unlike many small mammals, they don't hibernate. They stay active all winter under the snow in the "subnivean zone" a hidden, insulated environment that's between the bottom of the snowpack and the ground surface.

So @loreegriffinburns.bsky.social & I just gave a presentation called "The Curiosity Club" for the most curious 4th and 5th graders at Hunter College Campus School. We talked about the subnivean zone, marching caterpillars, finches, urban wildlife, and manatees and gosh, my heart is full.
