I don't think subsurf (1) is good for these. I really hate this waxy feeling it does.
Could try draw a map only for areas like nose or ears, but I should really focus on baseline skin and hair instead, it's always like that when I sit at this stuff. Dunno where to stick my fingers in.

that moment when you're working on a quick pic for halloween in blender. then blender crashes because the freakin subsurf modifier just has to have god damn duplicate button right next the apply button. so oops! blender crashes and corrupts the save with it.

Honestly I blame every tutorial on YouTube being like 'yeah so add a subsurf mod, set it to 3, then make your shape and you're done'. So many tuts made for render, not for use in engines

G6. Subsurf models are great, but that's not the end of the process. Optimize and reduce polycount where you don't need it
G7. Distinguish between 'modelling for render' tutorials and 'modelling for use'. If it only looks good at 200k polys, it's for render.

Auto-rig is a solid call, but only if the topology is quad-heavy. Dense subsurf meshes will make the FK/IK switch fight you. Check the edge loops around the shoulders.
