i suggest replacing "canon vs non-canon" with something like: textual (stated in text), authorial (stated by author), subtextual (implied), interpretable (admits interpretation by text), meta-textual (thematically interpretable by subtext), headcanon (audience creation for derivative art purpose)

One of the funniest things about those old British school fiction books, to me, is that mum was somehow able to read stuff like this (written in 1921) and not pick up that there was something going on.

I think a lot of straight women, including many who identify as feminists, use lesbians as a kind of rhetorical stand-in for disgusting, failed, or disposable women. But what lesbians actually represent is the maximalist expression of women’s freedom. When they come for us, they’re coming for you.
