#subtextual
all of us are imprinted on by those we have the chance (and choose) to spend time with. some of us get a wider set, some of us a narrower one, and it fluctuates. sometimes that set is influenced by those we form dependencies on (even if those dependencies are mild and subtextual).

…powerful. Despite talking about emotional topics, there’s still a hopefulness that runs counter to the nihilism of a lot of punk.Much of it feels very political on a subtextual level, without actually discussing politics. There are important themes here but best of all, it’s just a lot of fun.(2/2)

there's absolutely subtextual, non-verbalized communication in code (the assumption of UTF-8 encoding, for a common example): they're not wrong about the importance of any of this, they're just wrong about modern models not handling it

The number one reason to have diverse voices in comics is so that we can all have a moment of WAIT WHAT subtextual recontextualization later in life.

I've already been a big proponent of, first and foremost, taking art at face value before getting into allegory or metaphor or big-time subtextual analysis.

So, face value: fun movie. Great liminal horror, where the setting turns the tension inward on the characters. Very well made.

that subtext of “you exist for men” really ain’t very subtextual

I feel like, "YOU ARE NOT FUCKING KILLING US OVER THAT STUPID DEER!" is not subtextual, like at all.
But maybe I'm the crazy one.

having followed it all myself in these years, I think it's fair to say that for anyone it was relevant to, there was a ton of personal exploration and buildup in and out of the game, it just demanded engaging with the development and artistry with trust that they had substantial subtextual intent :P

I like the way NHK doramas write their male characters as "as they are" rather than trying to prove or disprove their humanity

feels like k-dramas without the subtextual racism and white supremacy

Ral's personhood is all wrapped up in the subtextual past that his aesthetic & attitude requires he have: he's an honorable old Prussian who remembers what the world of chivalry was like, but now finds himself fighting for the Nazis despite loathing their ideology bc he got grandfathered in.

People can date/sleep with whomever they please. But if ypur response to a bi man telling you he is bi is to treat them like a plague rat: it's a you problem.

Honestly a little tired of the subtextual inference that I'm either inherantly incapable of fidelity or less masculine for being... me.

Yeah, it was subtextual. The post relies on the assumption that a reader is 1. Going to read the article and 2. Aware of the usual MO of sextortion rings.

A lack of media literacy means an inability to examine subtextual elements of a story. Remedy can invite people to read the symbolism of different facets of Control's world, but it won't mean anything for them if they can't "read", so to speak.

you can tell that even the creators recognized that this was a problem when they did Better Call Saul and pretty much had to scream at the audience "JIMMY BECOMING SAUL GOODMAN IS A BAD THING"

compared to Breaking Bad which left everything largely subtextual and up to the audience to figure out

Like technically speaking, Jax is also this same stuff, the show on its own its just subtextual, Gooseworx just Said It and also confirmed a plethora of other gay shit you were supposed to see.

It's interesting he brings up poltergeist as well, because after watching the 2nd one, it was so bad, it's like they had to undermind the subtextual messages that existed in the first one on purpose to make it palatable for the brain dead americans.
The native american spoke in ugs and ums.

There is something somewhat subtextual in the sitcom that is life that while everything around us gets measurably worse and we're charged more for the privilege, marching powder somehow averts that.

Perhaps Huxley and Kafka are having dinner in the afterlife, I dunno.
The price of cocaine has roughly halved in the last couple of years, whilst purity has increased massively.

Price is going up again a little bit in the last year but it’s a very different market now — and here are (some) of the corollary social effects.
It feels like Britain and ireland needs to start talking about the mass scale of cocaine usage that seems to be happening

Just got off train to bunch of lads outside station playing techno and snorting lines. But seen similar in rural ireland

And that’s before get to the ‘patriots’

This is driving me insane.

Goodbye Lara's lesbian love story is not subtextual. Subtext is meaning drawn from attributes of a story beyond the literal moment to moment events that make up the plot.

The magic that happens on screen is not a metaphor. It is the literal material (1/6)

I was just stating an observation with a more subtextual hint that I'd like to see it more in art. Not my fault if my monstrously fat dragon wife got splash damaged~

sorry for replying to multiple posts in the thread but calling that shit subtextual is like actually an insult to subtext i'm not gonna lie.

yesterday i was thinking of making a post that's mad about the current state of yuri discourse following sayonara lara's finale cause it's all stupid takes about the show being subtextual about lara and mari's relationship, whether that be defending it as a writing choice or calling subtext writing-

you have to attack from all angles: subtextual, textual, and supertextual

well, you can probably drop the first one

It's quite funny when the subtextual and textual poltical divides overlap in Star Wars because they're about completely different things

I recall seeing a take a couple months ago where someone was basically using the term as a vague catch-all for "yuri that I don't think deserves to be called yuri" and putting anything remotely subtextual under that umbrella.
