FYI:
"Suffragettes" were terrorists who planted bombs
"Suffragists" were political actors who lobbied to change the law

On this day in 1917, Jeannette Rankin took her seat as the first woman elected in Congress. She told fellow suffragists: “I may be the first woman member of Congress, but I won’t be the last.”

Rankin is still the only woman to have represented Montana in Congress. #WeTheMen

Rebels. Abolitionists. Suffragists. Every generation rose to defy injustice & expand freedom proving democracy belongs to the people who fight for it.

Now it’s our turn to rise. Read Part I of The Tradition of American Resistance & join the unbroken line of defiance.

I really want to write something on how arts and crafts carried a significant role in acts of resistance through the ages. From the visuals and cookbooks of the suffragists to the knitting spies of WWII, it really is such a rich topic

Personally I think the spot would be better served depicting one of the many Black suffragists. Mary Church Terrell comes to mind.

The depiction of empowered women as deviant is not new. The mere idea of women voting was so terrifying to anti-suffragists that they concocted a specter of suffragists as abnormal childless spinsters who rejected men and marriage.

Civil disobedience shaped America: abolitionists defied slavery, suffragists went to prison, Rosa Parks refused to move, and activists challenged segregation and war.

Yesterday, protesters interrupted Pete Hegseth’s Iran war speech.

Power prefers silence. Democracy requires dissent.

Frances Harper was a suffragist, writer and orator. She was a poet, an essayist and a novelist.

She went on speaking tours and gave the money she received to the Underground Railroad.

She confronted white suffragists’ racism.

I get why the Suffragists and Prohibitionists were close to a perfect circle Venn diagram.

On this day in 1826, Matilda Joslyn Gage was born. In addition to inspiring the witches of Oz, she co-wrote a Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States (1876). When men barred women from the centennial ceremony, suffragists disrupted the proceedings and distributed copies. #WeTheMen

God, that was a fun* one, learning of the Southern Suffragists who opposed Federal Women's Suffrage and pushed for States to do it on their own, because they were terrified if women got the vote nationwide it would include Black women.

*not in fact fun

On this day in 1919, the 19th Amendment passed the Senate with just 2 votes to spare & went to the states for ratification. Suffragists like Maud Wood Park noted that Senators from states that had already enfranchised women feared alienating their female constituents & losing their seats. #WeTheMen

Badenock is absolutely trying to settle scores.

Most of them imaginary.

She’s also being ableist.

(While missing the point that the Suffragettes damaged property when the Suffragists were ignored by the press at the time…)

Kid has been learning about the Suffragettes, and is quite fixated on the difference between suffragettes and suffragists. Was not impressed when I said that suffragists grow up from the floor and suffragettes grow down from the ceiling.
