Specificity and Stereoselectivity of Cryptic Sulfotransferases
Sulfotransferases (STs) are ubiquitous enzymes found in all living organisms. These enzymes convert amines to sulfamates, and alcohols to sulfates, on a wide variety of biologically relevant molecules...

The latest paper by @emilylau.bsky.social et al in Biology Letters shows how ostracods, Renilla(,) and fireflies all use the same gene family (sulfotransferases) to modify chemically different bioluminescent substrates. Parallel evolution is fun! royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...
Similar enzymatic functions in distinct bioluminescence systems: evolutionary recruitment of sulfotransferases in ostracod light organs | Biology Letters
Genes from ancient families are sometimes involved in the convergent evolutionary origins of similar traits, even across vast phylogenetic distances. Sulfotransferases are an ancient family of enzymes...

Bioluminescence in ostracods, fireflies, and sea pansies is distinct: different functions, genes, & substrates. EXCEPT Each system metabolizes each luminous substrate using the same gene family - sulfotransferases! (next draft now live) by: @emilylau.bsky.social

Excited to see this work I first saw Sabina present at the Biocatalysis GRS this past summer online! Take a look to learn about a new subclass of sulfotransferases enabling stereoselective sulfation and chemoenzymatic conversion of amino alcohols to aziridines.
