The Mandler-era Summicrons are lovely things but a double Gauss is a double Gauss and you can't cheat physics so not even Mandler could escape swirliness wide open

Hmm, yeah. I can see that overall performance on the Summicron-R v1 (right) exceeds the Summicron-M DR (left). Especially in how it's more even across the frame. Interesting though that the R-mount is not as sharp wide-open (bottom set of lines).

Yeah those early hard-coatings were not nearly as good as the ones by the time of the R-mount. I think that would’ve been the biggest change for color though, a lot of the Summicron DNA was established with that first one.

I dabbled with the “Diesel Leicas” and they were cool, but more as engineering artifacts than actual cameras. I could never get away from a subconscious “This is just a Nikon F with extra steps and fewer & more expensive lenses” vibe.
