The Post-Crisis Supercomics really were their own kind of weird, weren't they?
as a much bigger fan of screwball comedy than of superheroics, it's the lack of this kind of thing - a lightness of touch, or really any cultural influences that aren't just other superhero comics from the same publisher - that makes it so hard for me to enjoy reading 21st century supercomics.
and the screwball comedy is right there in the original Siegel/Shuster comics, because it was in the successful adventure comic strips they were imitating. the clark & lois & superman triangle is a fundamentally screwball premise that wears bathetic (or worse, grimly serious) treatment with unease

i really only know DC’s through DC One Million, having ditched supercomics after that, and Crisis is the only one that bears revisiting, although i have fondness for individual tie-ins to nearly all of the ones in between

It's a fair point. Quality stopped publishing Plastic Man stories in 1956, and I.W. Publishing/SuperComics didn't publish their Plastic Man reprints until 1963.

mark waid would write supercomics the way he does even if the publishers we associate with them had ceased to exist before he ever got to write for them, i think, although it's a fun thought experiment to ask if that would make him *happier*. he has an american's true faith in brand loyalty, alas.

(This is similar to my Spider-Gwen BUT also. I’m GLAD there’s a popular lady hero in supercomics. But she’s a straight white lady hero.)

my main balk is it's still a book published into a shared supercomics continuity, starring someone said continuity will never not treat as a supervillain, so the concepts and temporary status quo it introduces will not last, which means it better have a good reason why it's worse if they don't -
